"When will you break the $50,000,000 barrier?", lead
ers of the Bond campaign were asked by Levi Eshkol—then
Israel's minister of finance-10 years after the establishment
of the campaign.

The barrier was soon broken. In 1966 the sale of Israel
Bonds reached $90,000,000. R. went up to $217,000,000 in
1967, the year of the Six-Day War. Last year a total of
$251,000,000 of Israel Bonds was bought by American Jewry.
This year the total it 20 per cent higher than last year.

JEWISH MOTIVATIONS: What makes the sale of Israel

1371

5 West 9 Mile,
L West of Coolidge, Oak Park

concludes its 1972 campaign with the sale of $300.000,000
of Israel Bonds, the highest record achieved since the
establishment of the campaign in 1951.

Bonds tick? The answer is: 1. The repayment of the
Bonds upon their maturity, or even earlier, with full
interest
and in American dollars; 2. The strong desire on
.a
the part of American Jewry to help Israel to expand its
economic opportunities, to develop its industry, to increase
its export, and to hasten ithe attainment of its economic
indepedence.

Remarkable changes have taken place in Israel as
a result of the economic development stimulated by Israel
Bonds. When the Israel Bond campaign was first launched
in this country in 1951, the economic situation in Israel
looked almost hopeless. Israel was in the grip of austerity,
unemployment was widespread, food was rationed, and
hundreds of thousands of newcomers were living in "maa-
baroth"—squalid temporary shelters.

The picture changed to a great extent as a result of
the impact of the proceeds derived by Israel from its
Bonds sold in the United States. Israel's entire economy
improved as large-scale construction and various industrial
projects began to take shape. With the aid of Israel Bonds—
which is in essence a loan on the part of American Jews
buying these bonds—Israel wculd have now been a long
way on the road toward economic independence, had it
not been for the high cost of its defense and the current !
need to absorb immigrants from the Soviet Union and
other countries.

It is estimated that there are presently
about 2,000,000 Israel isond holders in the United States.
They include not only individuals but also banks, pension
funds, insurance companies, labor unions, landsmanshaften.
synagogues which keep their building funds in Israel Bonds
and philanthropic groups which invest part of their reserve
capital in Israel Bonds.

Institutional investments in Israel Bonds are repaid at
request in dollars plus interest. Individuals receive their
dollars plus interest on the maturity date of the bonds, or
in Israeli currency at any time whenever they come to
visit Israel and wish to cash their bonds.

Thousands of American Jews visit Israel every year
bringing their Bonds with them and cashing them here to
cover their expenses during their stay in the country.

The redemption of Israel Bonds is taken for granted
as much as the redemption of U.S. Bonds. The Israel gov-
ernment has already redeemed $900,000,000 worth of its
Bonds.

THE MAN BEHIND: The spark plug of the Israel Bond
campaign in this country is Sam Rothberg, bacteriologist,
leading business executive and nationally prominent Jew-
ish communal figure. He was a principal founder of the
Israel Bond Organization. He is one of the American Jew-
ish leaders who has been in the forefront of every major
effort in Israel's behalf since the establishment of the
State of Israel.

Rothberg is not only general chairman of the Israel
Bond Organization, he is also president of Capital for Israel,
Inc., as well as president of Israel Investors Corporation.
He is also active in the leadership of the United Jewish
Appeal and is a member of its executive committee.

REMARKABLE RECORD: The Israel Bond Organization

Sam Rothberg, general chairman of the Israel Bond
organization, puts it this way: "It took us 16 years to
raise the first billion dollars. It took us 5 years to raise
the second billion. Aat the present rate of sale, we will
raise the third billion in three years, or less."
