TEL AVIV (JTA) — Ein
Netzarim, a new Nahal
(para-military) settlement in
the Gaza Strip has been of-
ficially established.
The settlement, about four
miles south of Gaza, will be
populated by members of
the Betar youth movement.
Several stone buildings have
been built by the housing
ministry.
Gen Rehavam Zeevi, com-
manding officer of the cen-
tral command, told the set-
tlers that they would have
to alternate their farming
with fighting against terror-
ists if necessary.
Ein Netzarim is the latest in
a series of Jewish settlements
established in the Gaza Strip,
officially for security rea-
sons, although Israel holds
that any territory under Is-
rael's control is open to set-
tlement.

Rabbi Shlomo Goren, one
of the two new chief rabbis
of Israel, can parachute
from an airplane, if neces-
sary. He was attached as
chaplain to the Israeli army
and seeing the young men
jumping, f el t he should
share their experience. He is
the kind of rabbi who likes
to actively identify himself
with his flock.
We met Rabbi Goren some
years back and asked if he
was afraid making the jump.
"Well," he said, "I recited
the Psalms as I jumped."'
He didn't have to look in
the Sidur while jumping. He
knew the Psalms by heart.
That made it easier for him.
The first chief rabbi of
Eretz Israel, Rabbi Kook,
was less the active man,
more the philosophical and
mystic type. His mind took
wings in the realms of mysti-
cism. To his mind the Jew-
ish people and Eretz Israel
were connected in some in-
timate bond that contravened
the normal, and his mystic
vision even included the pos-
sibility of man conquering
the final enemy — Death.
Rabbi
Kook's successor,
Rabbi Herzog, was a kind of
days, perhaps he would have
been a parachute jumper.
lie performed in the Roman
gladiator shows.
Rabbi Gamaiel did a jugg-
ling act in the synagogue in
ancient days — on Sukkot.
Hillel was a wood chopper.
Rashi raised grapes for a
living: Maimonides was a
physician.
Rabbi Isaac M. Wise had
a little farm near Cincinnati.
He was the great Reform
leader. He farmed and re-
formed, you might say.
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise con-
fessed that many people told
him he would have made a
great actor.
The saintly liafetz Hayim
opened a store but when he
found that the people were
patronizing his store out of
respect for the rabbinate
and to the detriment of his
competitor, he closed it.
The Zionist leader Nahum
Sokolow said of his rabbi
that once he was offered
some money but he didn't
know what it was. The rab-
bi's wife was the breadwin-
ner. The rabbi sat all day
and "learned."
