KOL AMI
Ernest 1.
Conrad, Rabbi
What is a Temple? I recently had the need to
answer that question in reference to our particular
Temple.
I initiated my answer by ticking off several points,
such as: we are small, only 140 families and by our
constitution cannot go over 300 families; we have
few sermons but gather after services to discuss
various topics, that although we plan to build, our
building will be adequate and not a monument, that
fortunetly for us we enjoy a member to member and
Rabbi to member communication. I went on to elab-
orate about our cornucopia of social events ; the de-
votion to excellence and cre,,ion of excitement in our
religous. school and although never done our accom-
plishments in social community action.
I tried, but I did not feel that I was truely explain-
ing our uniqueness_
we are 'not a
I've given it considerable thought . .
Temple! Oh yes, in the theological and historical
sense we certainly are, but much more so . we
are Family. Like Family we argue and disagree, but
like Family we love and respect each other,
Today, maybe more than ever, all of us need a
true, sense of belonging, an identification, a com-
munication, we need to be individuals not just an-
other name .
Yes, by golly, we are unique or different because
and that is different.
.
that's the way we feel
So from our Family to Yours, best wishes for
the New Year

On the surface it would appear to be relatively
simple question, answered by a theological discription
with a historical background. However I knew the
question presented to me was a specific one, ie.
"What is 'your' Temple". My questioner knew what
a Temple was and I assumed they wanted to know
if we were different and if so what made us differ-

HIGH HOLIDAY SERVICES
The High Holidays ant, for Jewish humanists, a time for re-
flection and honesty—a time when we match our behavior
to our stated ideals. It is the season when we take stock
of our personal lives and attempt to clarify the philosophy
by which we seek to live.
