Israel Warns Syria Against Violent
Incidents in Golan Heights Region
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The Israel
government issued a statement
here Tuesday night, citing a recent
list of violent incidents against Is-
raeli installations in the occupied
Golan Heights, which observers
said was tantamount to a warn-
ing to the Syrian regime.
The statement said Israel was
taking a "grave view" of "the
escalation' of such incidents, with
particular emphasis on the latest
firing of more than 12 mortar shells
on Monday and Tuesday in the
Nahal Golan area.
The statement said the mortar
shooting climaxed increased ac-
tivities along the cease-fire
asserting that 22 incidents had
been recorded since June.
Among those incidents, the state-
ment said, were acts of sabotage,
light arms firing, bazooka shelling,
Katyusha rocket shooting, penetra-
tion by five Syrian Soviet-made
MIGs and crossing by Syrian sold-
iers into Israel-held territories.
"Teach me to serve God in the
right way!"
The rabbi replied: "There are
many ways and it is impossible to
tell which way a man should
choose. One serves God with study
another with prayer; one with fast-
ing and one with eating. Every one

THE RIGHT CHILD
Once, after a Sabbath meal,
when there were many married
men present, the Yehudi said:
"My good people! If I were to ask
why you work so hard, you would
answer To bring up my son to
study, and worship God.' But when
the son has grown into manhood,
he forgets why his father worked
so hard, and he, too, works hard,
and if you will ask him why, he
will give the same answer as his
father. And thus it goes in every
generation. But when, at last, shall
we see the right child?"
Havdala and Spice
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
The Havdala on Saturday night
is recited over wine.
The commandment in the Bible
which orders the Jew to "remem-
ber the Sabbath" is interpreted by
rabbis to be a kind of awareness
that is accompanied by the cup of
wine on Friday night, and the Hay-
dala is recited over the wine on
Saturday night. Using the wine is
perhaps a symbol of the joy with
which one greets the Sabbath on
its coming and on its going. This
is comparable to toasting to a good
friend or desired guest both when
he comes and when he leaves.
Some commentaries (Toldat Yaa•
kov) claim that the use of the
wine for the Havdala ceremony at
the end of the Sabbath serves to
fortify man's spirit which is weak-
ened at the thought of having the
Sabbath leave him. The Sabbath
is supposed to endow man with
"an additional soul." The depar-
ture of the Sabbath thus finds this
additional soul leaving him. The
use of the wine reminds him to
keep up his courage because the
additional soul will return to him
once again on the next Sabbath.
Spices used at the Havdala
ceremony:
According to some commentaries
(Tosafot Pesakim 102:D) the spices
also are used to bolster man's
spirit. The aroma of the spices
are representative of the spirit of
confidence and assurance which
man gains on the Sabbath and
which make hire feel satisfied.
Those things in life which are de-
sirable are sometimes character-
ized by the presence of a pleasant
aroma. The Sabbath certainly is
one of them and, thus, when the
Sabbath is gone, at least the me-
mory of the Sabbath remains. The
aroma thus rests with man as a
reminder of this during the rest
of the week.

Indispensable Hebrew
There are religious, cultural and
practical reasons why Hebrew is
indispensable to the Jew concerned
with the fate of Jewry and Ju-
daism. To t h e religious Jew,
Hebrew is the language of wor-
ship and Jewish religious thought.
To men of letters. Hebrew is the
key to a classic literature which
records the intimate experiences
and memories of an ancient peo-
ple. To lovers of Israel, Hebrew
can serve as a bond of unity with
world Jewry and the Slate of
Israel. To Jewry at large, Hebrew
can serve as a potent factor in
Jewish survival, for it links the
Jew to his past, binds him to the
present, and enables him to share
in the vision for a creative Jewish
life in the future.
— Samuel M. Blumenfeld
The Jew's Gravest Sin
The Jewish people is represent-
ed by every individual Jew. We
need to remember where we came
from, and the way to do this is by
study of our great books. We are
God's stake in human history. We
must reawaken our consciousness
of being involved in a history that
transcends the interests and glories
of particular dynasties and em-
pires. The gravest sin for a Jew is
to forget—or not to know—what he
represents.

"The Earth Is the Lord's."
