Quick Burial Part
of Jewish Tradition
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright 1972,JTA Inc.)
Jewish tradition insists up-
on burying the corpse as
soon as possible.
The source is generally de-
rived from the biblical pro-
hibition against allowing the
remains of the victim of
death punishment to be un-
buried overnight. (Deut. 23:
23).
It is taken to indicate that
to keep a body from burial is
an insult to the deceased.
Jewish tradition strongly in-
sisted on the dignity of man
-both in life as well as in
death. Even the remains of
a criminal were to be treated
with respect and buried as
soon as possible.
It is claimed by some that
delayed burial permits de-
cay of the physical remains.
Others say the delay keeps
emphasizing the embarrass-
ing differences between the
living bodies and the dead
corpse. Some claim that
burial is hastened because it
removes the dead from the
immediate physical environ-
ment of the living.
There are some who claim
that the mourners are ex-
empt or forbidden to engage
in religious practices while
the body is unburied and
thus the delay in burial
means a delay in the observ-
ance of religious obligations.
Mystics claim that the soul
is not at rest until the body
is buried, and therefore, de-
laying the burial continues
the restlessness of the soul.
'Shabos Hazak'
"Shabos Hazak" is
the
name given to the Sabbath
on which one of the Five
Books of Moses is completed.
in the course of the Torah
reading for that Sabbath..
The name comes from the
expression used by the con-
gregation when the last sen-
tence of the book is read.
The congregation exclaims
"Hazak, Hazak veNishazek"
(Be strengthened, Be
strengthened and let us be
strengthened) at such an oc-
casion. Actually in many
parts of France and Provence
the congregations would wish
each person who completes
the reading of any portion
or who has a portion of the
Torah read for him "Ilazak"
(Be strengthened),
In Sephardic congregations
even today each worshiper
is greeted by the expres-
sion "Hazak - Barukh• (Be
strengthened and blessed
after he retires from having
been called to the Torah for
a reading of a portion. Some
claim that this practice
comes from a contention that
the study of Torah weakens
the strength of the individual
in a physical sense because
of the intensity of study in.
volved. Thus, when one has
appeared before the Torah to
hays a portion read for him.
he is wished "strength" to
conti•!e his uivolvertent

thai
the study of Torah
