Dr. Louis D. Stern, 80;
Noted Hematologist
The Jewish News has jus, been
advised of the death of Dr. Louis
D. Stern, a noted hematologist, on
June 11. He Was 80.
Dr. Stern, 10410 E. Jefferson,
was a consultant at a number of
_hospitals, including Sinai which
he assisted in plans for establish-
ing the blood laboratory. At one
time, he joined other medical
specialists as a volunteer for the
old North End Clinic, on Holbrook,
predecessor to Sinai's Shiffman
Clinic. He headed the blood labora-

Shirley R. Shapiro, a school
teacher at Henry Ford High School
for the past eight years, died June
24. She was 43.
Born and raised in Detroit, Mrs.
Shapiro, 27075 Devonshire, South-
field, served as speech and drama
coach at Ford High. She attended
Michigan State University and
UCLA and received her teaching
degree from Wayne State Uni-
versity in 1963. She was a member
of the Detroit Federation of
Teachers, Detroit Chapter of Ha-
dassah. Detroit Film Forum, Phi
Lambda Theta fraternity, the
Metropolitan Detroit English Club
(Teachers Honorary Society) and
the Michigan Speech Association.
Also, she was a member of Cong.

received her education degree

Michigan in 1963. A year later, she
studied at the Sorbonne.
She was a member of the Panel
of American Women, an interra-
cial group to combat religious and
racial prejudices. She also was a
volunteer for the American Can-
cer Society.

NEW YORK—Henriette Roosen-
burg, the first woman to win the
Bronze Lion of the Netherlands.
for her work as an underground
organizer against the Nazis, died
June 21 in her home in Poet-Laval
in the south of France.
Miss Roosenburg, 56, a Dutch
citizen, recorded her experiences
in "The Walls Came Tumbling
Down." A journalist, she aided
refugees and acted as a courier
for Allied Intelligence in occupied
Belgium, France and the Nether-
lands until she was arrested by the
Gestapo in Brussels in 1944. She
was condemned to death but was
liberated by the Soviet army be-
fore execution could take place.
