Crisis AN erted

TEL AVIV (JTA1—The financial
crisis that threatened to close Tel
Aviv University seems to he
averted, at least for the time be-
ing. The government agreed to
increase its grant and the univer-
sity decided to cut $1,180.000 from
its 327.300.000 budget.
Supporters abroad have under-
taken to raise an additional 32.-
700.000 which would reduce the
deficit to $1,180.000.
As a result, faculty member's
and administrative employes are
expected to be paid their full sal-
aries,
averting the threat of a
strike. Yigal Alton, the deputy
premier and minister of education,
nevertheless, has proposed that the
government appoint accountants
to oversee the finances of all of
the country's universities and
other institutions of higher learn-

Alton said that another Stl.

quired from the government to
keep the omversities open.

Friday,

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

TEL AVIV t'ZINSiThe gover-
non of the Bank of Israel has ad-
vised the International Monetary
Fund of the realignment of the
Israel pound to the price of gold.
, The announcement in no way af-
fects the present value of Israel
currency, which is pegged at the
official exchange rate of IL 4.2 to
the U.S. dollar.
According to the realignment,
one Israel pound will now "buy"
0.194884 grams of gold instead of
0.2t1588 grams, the previous equi-
valent. This is a technical figure of

no- practical importance, because
the Israel pound is not a converti-
ble currency and therefore cannot

be used in the purchase of gold on
the open market regardless
of
price.
