NEW JDC PROJECTS: While', transferring Malben institutions to
the association, the JDC is embarking on a SI0,000,000 project in its
programs for the aged in Israel.] It will establish a Gerontological
Institute in Jerusalem to study all facets of the problems of the aging
and provide training opportunitieS for professional personnel work-
ing with the aged. It also will establish geriatric departments at gen-
eral hospitals. It also envisages other programs on which more than

$35,000,000 will be spent until the end of this decade. At present, the
JDC spends about $10,000,001 a year on its work in Israel.

Care of the aged immigrants iS only one aspect of the JDC work
in Israel. Its relief and rehabilitation programs reach out also in
other directions.

Few' in the United States, for instance, are aware of the fact
that the JDC subsidizes 137 yeshiviath in Israel to the extent of about
S1.300.000 a year. There are about 19,00 students in these yeshivoth.
It is also worthwhile noting that the JDC generously helps the ORT
with an annual grant. a half of which is spent in Israel to support
schools for about 36.000 students. This year the JDC grant to ORT is
close to $3,000,000.

The JDC also contributes a great deal to the training in Israel of
professional social workers for with the country has great need. It
