PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — The
12.000,000-member Southern Bap-
tist Convention, the largest Pro-
testant denomination in the U.S.,
declared anti-Semitism "un-Chris-
tian" in a resolution adopted un-
animously here Wednesday morn-
ing by 13,000 "messengers" at-
tending the convention's annual
meeting.
The resolution pledged the
Southern _Baptist Convention to
combate anti-Semitism "in every
honorable Christian way."
The resolution, the first of its
kind to be adopted by the con-
vention, was drafted and intro-

Israel Ranks High
r-
in Social Services

NEW YORK (ZINS) — Despite
the continued necessity of large
outlays for defense, Israel con-
tinues to apply a very substantial
part of its gross national income
to social service programs, "plac-
ing it ahead of most countries in
the world, and close to such afflu-
ent countries as the United States."
according to a study released by
the Israel office of the American '
Jewish Committee.

Dr. Joseph Neipris, assistant
director of the Hebrew University's
Paul Baerwald School of Social.
Work, author of the study, asserts
that any person in Israel, regard-
less of race or ethnic origin, with !
economic or other difficulties can
receive help from national or local
a uthorities, or from voluntary
a gencies.

Among the study's other find-
ings are the following: More than
4 per cent of the families in Is-
rael are dependent on public
funds for their regular income,
and another 6.7 per cent for
supplementary benefits; of a
total population of about
3,000,000 more than 130,000 in-
dividuals get old-age benefits;
and more than 40,000 get sur-
vivor's benefits.
Also, since the Six-Day War, the
welfare services have included
those residents of Arab territories
currently administered by Israel
who were not eligible for the
refugee assistance programs of the
United Nations. Voluntary agencies
account for about 35 per cent of
the total expenditures for welfare
services.

professor of biblical literature at

Rabbi Marc Tannenbaum. di-
rector of the inter religious affairs
department of the American
Jewish Committee, hailed it as an
"unprecedented development in
Southern Baptist history."
Rabbi Tannenbaum told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency that
the resolution was "one of the
impressive fruits" of a recent
dialogue held between the
Southern Baptist Convention and
the American Jewish communi-
ty. Ile said it was particularly
significant, coming on the eve
of Explo-72. an evangelical
meeting to be held in Dallas
Monday-Thursday. expected to
be attended by 100,000 people.
Rabbi Tannenbaum said that
misgivings have been felt that
Explo-72 might spark a resurg-
ence of anti-Semitism and con-
version attempts because its or-
ganizers are fundamentalists who
demand a literalist interpretation
of the Scriptures, which lends itself
to the charge of deicide against
