published, including the Standard
Jewish Encyclopedia, edited by
Prof Cecil Roth, internationally
renowned Jewish historian of En,-
land who settled in Israel in 1964
and died there :n 1970.
More has happened to the
Jewish people in recent decades
than in many centuries, and the
need has long been felt for a
new, modern, scientific and un-
ttydate Jewish encyclopedia
in
English. Recent times have wit-
nessei major revolutions in Jew-
ish life. The Holocaust brought
the tragic annihilation of so much
of Jewish life and learning, lost

and Queen Elizabeth of England.
It was edited by Prof. Roth, who
was succeeded after his death by
Dr. Geoffrey Wigoder of the He-
brew University. Nearly 2.000 con-
tributors froth 39 countries helped
produce the definitive work.
The encyclopedia contains over
11,000,000 words in more than
13,000 pages, with 8,000 illus-
trations, maps, charts and dia-
grams. The richness of the Jew-
ish heritage, traditions, philoso-
phy, rituals, religion and way
of life are within the covers of
the Encyclopedia Judaica, with
special documentation of the
Holocaust period, the establish-
ment and development of the
state of Israel, and contempir
ary Jewry.
The researcher, scholar. student
and layman will find in the
of the new encyclopedia a com-
plete library of authoritative sum-
maries of Jewish knowledge in a
lucid presentaticn of the past and
the present.
Detroiters will be pleased to
learn that they are represented in
the "Encyclopedia Judaica" by Dr.
Bernard M. Goldman. professor of
art history at Wayne State Uni-
versity, Dr. Joseph Gutmann. pro-
fessor of art history at Wayne
State University: Irving 1 Katz.
executive secretary of Temple Beth
1-11 and historiographer of the Jews
of Michigan, and Philip Slomovitz,
editor of The Detroit Jewish News.
Goldman's two articles deal with
the 6th Century Bet Alpha Syna-
gogue in Israel. Gutmann's five
articles are devoted to illuminated
Hebrew manuscripts of the Middle
Ages. Slomovitz's articles deal with

journalism. Katz's 10
