Hamburger Proposes Expanded Israel
Scholarship Program, Renewed Youth
Work, Aid for UJA, Bonds as ZOD Tasks

versities and among the youth. in
addition to giving increased sup-
port to philanthropic and invest- •
ment projects for Israel. were out-
lined this week by Dr. Joel Ham-
burger, retiring president of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit,
in his annual message to the mem-
bership.
Pointing to the three-day Wayne
State University Teach-In that was
sponsored by ZOD during his sec- ,
and year in office. Dr. Hamburger
proposed continuation of such un-
dertakings, in addition to other,
cultural programs among youth. '
"We must promote the iden-
tification of our youth with the
historical destiny and tradition
of the Jewish people," he em-
phasized in the report submitted
at the annual meeting of ZOD
Thursday at the Zionist Cul-
tural Center.
Dr. hamburger placed emphasis
on the scholarships awarded by
ZOD with aid from the ZOD's
Philip Slomovitz Scholarship Fund.

Molly Goodman high School and
Kfar Silver in Israel, the full year-

He urged continued sponsorship
of trade fairs to encourage pur-
chase of Israel-made goods_ and
on the questions of aid to Israel in
all spheres he said:
We should support fund-rais-
ing campaigns for Israel which
provide capital development
funds (Israel Bonds): funds for
social welfare programs (Allied
Jewish Campaign—Israel Emer-
gency Fund): and funds to sup-
port educational and philan-
thropic institutions in Israel. As
Zionists it is our obligation to
contribute to the support Of all

worthwhile causes that sera e to
strengthen the state of Israel,

regardless of petty political con-
siderations. Such contributions
should nit he looked upon as
gifts w hich we bestow on less
fortuntitc, at our cunt enience
and in amounts that lease our

standard of living unaltered.
This is not Zionism. Zionist
contributes because it is his ob-
ligation to assist in the growth

and development of his home
land: because as Israel grows
in stature he himself somehow
feels taller: because anything
that diminishes Israel diminishes
him: because unless his contribu-
tion means that he will forgo
some of the pleasures to which
