Shalom Moscowitz, known as
Shalom of Safed, was a Safed
watchmaker whose shop was
bombed by the Arabs. He was
already in his 60s at the

living, he began to hand-make

art colony nearby was fascinated
by Shalom's work and suggested
that he try his hand at painting
on canvas. Today, nearing 80,
Shalom is paid as much as $1,500
to $3,000 by leading museums
throughout the world for a single

honor its past presidents at a
"hai" (18th) banquet May 7 at the
synagogue.
The congregation will pay tri-
bute to the men whose leadership
contributed to the growth and
success of Young Israel. Past
presidents are Morrie Novetsky,
the late Max Nusbaum. Erry
Loewenthal. Jack Ginsburg, Sam
Platt, Sol Lessman. Phillip Stoll-

origin. The first Jewish com-
munity on the island lasted for
500 years. Last summer the
Spanish government granted per-
mission for the establishment of
an official Jewish community on
