Bnei Brak Gets Library
Despite Orthodox Fuss

TEL AVIV .(JTA)—Despite op-
position by ultra-Orthodox•- ele-'
ments, the 'religious township of
Bnei Brak soon will get its first
free public library, to be housed
in an old fire brigade building
The decision was made at a town
council meeting.
Bnei Brak, a suburb rof Tel Aviv,
was founded 48 years ago and
became a municipality • 25 -Oars-
ago. It has no movie house and
is the only township in Israel ,
where all traffic is forbidden on
the Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
The Agudath Israel representa-
tives on the town council claim-
ed that religions Jews who
studied the Torah had no need
for a library where "pornogra-,
phy" might be found on the
shelves.

But the more moderate National
Religious Party, supported by re-
ligious Labor Party members, mus-
tered a majority vote for a lib-
rary.

Heretofore, residents of the town
had to travel to nearby Ramat Gan
if they wished to obtain a book
other than a religious tract.

4-Room Apartment
in-Jerusalem Now Costs
More Than $48,000

JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Of all
Israel's cities where the cost of
housing is steadily climbing, Jeru-
salem by far is the most expen-
sive.
In a predominantly sellers' mar-
ket, builders wait for time to oper-
ate in their favor, as the price of
dwellings increases from month to
month.
The shortage of suitable build-
ing sites further aggravates the
situation. Some blame also is
placed on newcomers from the
U. S., who, having chosen Jeru-
salem as their new home,_ are
ready to pay whatever the pre-
vailing prices might be. They
translate the cost in Israel
pounds into U. S. dollars and,
from their standpoint, housing
is cheaper now by 2$ per cent
owing to the recent devaluation
of the Israel pound.
Costs have skyrocketed to such
an extent, however, that in the
choice neighborhood of Rebavia,
Jerusalem, a three-room apart-
ment is priced at between IL 160,-
000 ($38,400) to IL 180,000 ($43,-
200).
A four-room dwelling carries a
price tag in excess of IL 200,000
($48,000) in Tel Aviv, where the
prices are somewhat more "rea-
sonable," a comparable four-room
apartment is "only" IL 180,000.
