Flu Outbreak in Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- An
outbreak of Asian flu has emptied
many Jerusalem classrooms and
is forcing business establishments
and public institutions to operate
with reduced manpower.
The health ministry said the
virus isolated so far is the same
Asian flu that spread worldwide
several years ago. But it was not
sure whether all cases here stem-
med from the same virus.

PLAQUE CITING
COMMODORE LEVY

United States Navy will honor the
the memory of Commodore Uriah
Phillips Levy (1792-1862) who rose
from cabin boy to the Navy's high-
est rank during his long career.
Ceremonies dedicating a com-
memorative plaque for Levy will be
held Sunday at the Norfolk Naval
Station Chapel Center. The plaque
was donated by the United Jewish
Federation of Norfolk and Virginia
Beach and commemorates the
naming of the chapel for Levy in
Dec. 1959.
It is the first permanent Jewish
chapel on a-U.S. military installa-
tion.
Levy is recognized as the lead-
ing protagonist of the law which
outlawed punishment by flogging
in the Navy.
The plaque honors the com-
modore's navel achievements
and his patriotism to the nation
and his religion. He started his
naval, career as a cabin boy at
age la and rose to the rank of
commodore and command of the
sloop-of-war, the USS Macedo-
nian, at age 68.
The commemoration points out
that Commodore Levy's "love for
America and the American herit-
age, led him to purchase Thomas
Jefferson's home, 'Monticello,' that
it might be preserved for poster-
ity." He also presented to -the
American -people the statue of
Jefferson, signing the Declaration
of Independence, which stands in
the Capitol.
While a lieutenant, Commodore
Levy was offered a captaincy in
the Brazilian Navy by Dom Pedro
I. He refused the offering saying,
"I would rather serve as a cabin
boy in the American Navy than a
captain in any other service in the
world."

NORFOLK. Va. (JTA) — The

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Demonstra-
tors protested angrily in the streets
of Zichron Yaacov against the sale
of land there and in adjoining
towns to a German missionary
group.
The group purchased 15 acres in
Zichron Yaacov proper, one of
the earliest Jewish settlements in
Palestine, and now one of Israel's
main convalescent centers; .23
acres in Binyamina; a vineyard in
the village of Givat Ada; and a
three-story building in Haifa.
The demonstrators, led by a local
rabbi- and Knesset member Ben
Zion Keshet, rallied against the
property owners who sold to the
Germans because they were "blind-
ed by" the high price offered.
They carried posters reading "Do
Not Sell Your Land to Germans.
Remember the Holocaust." -
Local authorities said the trans-
actions were perfectly legal and
the transfer of ownership cannot
be prevented
