Elrom's Murderers Sentenced to Death
LONDON (JTA)—Five members
of the extreme Left Wing Turkish
People's Liberation Army were
sentenced to death by a military
court in Istanbul for their part
in the kidnap murder of Israeli
Consul General Ephraim Elrom
on May 22.
Kamel Dede, 22, and Meomi De-
mir, 27, both male, were found
guilty of attempting to overthrow
the government by force, kidnap-
ing, murder and other acts of ter-
rorism. Three women students in
their 20s—Ilkay Demir, wife of
Meomi Demir; Kadrive Denizozen
and Ruchan Manas—had their
death sentences reduced to life
imprisonment. Tulay Tad, 30, a
nurse, was sentenced to 10 months
in jail for harboring several of
the accused, and three youths and
a young woman were acquitted.
The three chief suspects—Mahir
Cayan, Ulas Bardakci and Ziya
Yilmaz—escaped from prison earl-
ier this month and are still at
large.

An American Student in Israel
By STEVE RAPHAEL
A 20-year-old American college
student, spending his junior year
at Hebrew University, has found
that things aren't all milk and
honey for American students in
Israel.
Ira Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Maxwell Hoffman of Jeanette Dr.,
Southfield, "got interested in
Judaism as a culture and wanted
a new experience." Hence, he took
advantage of a University of Michi-
gan program that allows its stu-
dents to spend their junior year
studying abroad.
Hoffman, home for the quarter
0 break, has enjoyed his stay in
Israel, but admits that the ex-
perience hasn't been as great as
he had expected. He complained of
the segregation of American and
Israeli students, not only in the
4 dormitories, but also in the class-
room.

most of the Israeli students at-

campus."
American students live in dorms
on campus, but because there was
no room for him in the dorm, Hoff-
man was forced to live with an
American family. And with the
exception of intramural sports,
Hoffman has had little opportunity
to mingle with Israelis.
"I'm segregated but exposed,"
he said. Americans naturally have
common cultural and language
backgrounds, and therefore, stick
together." Hoffman explained that
the average Israeli spends three
years in the army before coming
to school, so is older than his
American counterpart.
Hoffman conceded that a part
of the problem was that he and
most other Americans knew little
Hebrew. He said most Israelis can
speak English.
The ease with which American
students are accepted for admis-
sion into Hebrew University has
been a source of irritation between
Israeli students and the adminis-
tration, with' American students
caught in the middle. "It is tougher
for an Israeli to get into Hebrew
University than it is for an Ameri-
can," he said.
Hoffman attributed this policy to
the desire of the Israeli government
to attract more olim. "They want
Americans to come here and enjoy
the country so eventually, even if
they don't move here permanently,
they will, at least, contribute finan-
cially to Israel."

few political science classes at
Hebrew University of a total 20
hours credit. He finds classes
easier than those in American
school only because Israeli pro-
fessors are usually lenient. "They
regard this program as a vaca-
tion or a year off for American
students."
Hoffman believes Hebrew Uni-
versity has a tougher graduate and
PhD program than American
schools. He says the competition
for Israeli students seeking admis-
sions into Hebrew University is 5
tougher than it is for Americans
seeking entrance into Harvard.
American students have been
criticized for bringing their cowl- yy
ter-culture with them to Israel, and t
Hoffman admits that this is true
to a small degree. He noted though
"Israeli students are quick to
criticize us, but even quicker to
imitate us."
Hoffman has been is Israel five
months, (he had ulpan, Hebrew
studies, from mid-July to mid-Octo-
ber and will be in school till mid-
June), and has had a chance to
travel throughout the country. He
has been most impressed by the
industrialization and modernization
of the land, "especially considering
the hardships that the Israelis have
faced."
Even though the experience
. hasn't been 100 per cent rewarding,
Hoffman does plan to go back to
Israel some day. "I've been dis-
illusioned by the segregation and
criticism, but I definitely will re-
turn; I don't how long and I don't
