Roommates Jay Masserman and
David Harold, seniors at the Uni-
versity of Michigan Medical
School, have been accepted as ex-
terns at the Hadassah Hospital-
Hebrew University Medical Cen-
ter in Jerusalem. They will' have
a three-month period of duty in
the internal medicine division of
Hadassah Hospital.
Masserman previously spent 14
months studying at the Hebrew
University during his junior year
and was in Israel during the Six-
Day War. Harold worked in a
Golan Heights kibutz for six
months after the Six-Day War.
Masserman is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Masserman of
Coolidge Ave., Oak Park, and
Harold is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Harold of Essex Way, South-
field. They will receive their MD
degrees in June.

REHOVOT — First prize in the
Weizmann Institute's biennial Sci-
ence Fair, held in cooperation with
the Israel Discount Bank, was
awarded to Yehuda Ish-Shalom of
Haifa for his original ultrasonic
device for guiding the blind, which
is now being developed for possi-
ble commercial manufacture.
He received his IL 1,500 ($360)
prize from the chairman of the
awards committee, Prof. Gvirol
Goldring, of the Weizmann Insti-
tute's nuclear physics department.
The ultrasonic device built by
Ish-Shalom while he was a student
at the Haifa Technical High School
(he is now in his first year at the
Haifa Technion) won much praise
from Prof. Goldring for its pre-
cision and reliability.

Rabbi WILLIAM BERKOWITZ
was honored with life tenure at
Cong. Bnai Jeshurun of New York,
during a dinner at the Waldorf-
Astoria Hotel Dec. 15. Rabbi Ber-
kowitz, 45, has been with Bnai
Jeshurun for more than 20 years.

The newly appointed consul for the Ivory Coast in the Detroit area,
attorney John H. Shepherd, received his credentials frorn the Ivory
Coast ambassador recently. Timothee Ahoua, ambassador for the
Republic of the Ivory Coast to the U.S.A. and Canada, made the formal
presentation in the African room at the home of Michigan Supreme
Court Justice G. Mennen Williams, who served as assistant secretary
of state for African affairs during the Kennedy and Johnson admin-
istrations. The Detroit consulate will be the second for the Ivory Coast
in the U.S. The other is in Los Angeles. Shepherd, who graduated from
the University of Michigan and its law school and studied international
law at the university of Paris on a Fullbright scholarship, is a former
assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. He taught
international law, constitutional law and political science at Wayne
State University.
Educators from Michigan and Ohio of the Conservative independent
congregational school movement convened for their winter professional
program at Cong. Beth Am, Cleveland Heights this week. Leading the
Michigan delegation was the president of the region, Sidney Selig, direc-
tor of education at Cong. Beth Shalom, and Pinhas Fellus, director of
education, Beth Israel Hebrew Religious School, Flint. The latter pre-
sented a paper on "An Experimental Approach to Modular Scheduling
in Junior High School."
Jeffrey Allen Sonshine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sonshine of
Shiawasee Rd., is returning home for a three-week vacation after
serving 18 months in Ecuador as a Peace Corps volunteer. His
primary duties there have been to help raise the standard of living
by arranging unsecured loans for small businesses and helping estab-
lish and encourage independent enterprise.
