1971 ALLIED JEWISH CAMPAIGN-ISRAEL FUND MAKES HISTORY
WITH $13,200,000 PLEDGED BY A GENEROUS COMMUNITY

In a year marked by economic uncertainty in the United States, Israel
faced with a struggle for survival found it necessary to appeal for more help
than had ever been asked before.

In response, the men in attendance at the first pre-campaign meeting
of the 1971 Allied JewishCampaign-Israel Emergency Fund, held in Novem-
ber, 1970, doubled and tripled their pledges of former years in an effort to
make their commitment commensurate with the crisis which Israel faced.
Led by Meyer M. Fishman and Max M. Shaye, chairmen, this magnifi-
cent tone echoed throughout the campaign which had its culmination in May
1971 with a total of $13,200,000 pledged for vital services at home and
overseas.

Under the rallying cry of "Crisis Yisrael" more people attended pre-
campaign meetings. Trades and Professions Divisinos reported greater inter-
est and attendance. Metropolitan Division had more workers than ever. The
Junior Division reached 150% of its 1970 pledged amount.
Israel sent Louis Pincus, chairman of the Jewish Agency; Shimon
Peres, Minister of Transport; Josef Tekoah, Ambassador to the United Na-
tions; Gershon Avner, assistant director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and four members of Kfar Ruppin, a kibbutz on the Jordanian border, to
inform and inspire. Prime Minister Golda Meir came to the 1970 annual
dinner by way of a special film to appeal for extra help for Israel.
Their message was reinforced by concerned American Jewish leaders:
Mrs. Burt J. Siris, Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New
York; Samuel L. Haber, executive vice-president of the Joint Distribution
Committee, and many other local and national personalities.
The result of long hours of organization by campaign leaders and
thousands of hours spent by volunteer workers in soliciting pledges placed
Detroit Jews high in the eschelon of communities whose people said, 'I care'
and backed the statement with hard work and increased pledges.
