Japan Asks Israel
to Support China Bid

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Japan has
formally asked Israel to support a
19-nation proposal before the Unit-
ed Nations General Atsembly call-
ing for a two-China solution to the
problem of that nation's repre-
sentation in the world organization.
Ambassador Eiqi Tokura called
on the foreign ministry's director
general, ,Gideon Rafael. to explain
the proposal which would seat
Peking's representative in both the
General Assembly and the Secur-
ity Council while retaining the Chi-
nese Nationalist representation
from Taiwan in the General As-
sembly.
In a taped interview on Israel
Radio, Foreign Minister Abba
Eban said Israel would support
the seating of Peking at the UN
but has not decided how to vote
en the Taiwan issue because of
the complex procedural situa-
tion.
He recalled that as early as 1950
Israel had recognized Peking as
the government of China.

67,000 More Jews
in Latest Israel Count;
Total Tops 3 Million

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
Central Bureau of Statistics has
announced that Israel's popula-
tion now stands 4t 3,062,000, of
which 2,610,000 ar listed- as Jews
and 452,000 as non-Jews.
The latest figure represents a
population increase of 67,000
which 2,610,000 are listed as
Jews and 452,000 as non-Jews.
According to the bureau, 60
per cent of the Jewish popula-
tion growth represented natural
increase and 40 per cent immi-
gration. The growth of the non-
Jewish population was almost
entirely by natural increase.



Israeli Fatally Hurt;
Two Gazans Killed

TEL AVIV (JTA) — An Israeli
soldier was fatally wounded and
two residents of the Gaza Strip
were killed as violence continues
to plague the area.
A terrorist was killed in a clash
with a military patrol.
The soldier was identified as
Pvt. Eliyahu Ostermayer, 19, of
Ofarim. He succumbed to wounds
inflicted by a hand gr ena de
thrown at an Israeli patrol at Beth
Lahya. Another -member of the pa-
trol was injured.
In the Sheikh Zoued area south
of Gaza; the victims were shot
when they failed to obey an order
to halt by an Israeli patrol after
curfew.
Israeli security authorities dis-
closed that 90 persons were arrest-
ed on suspicion of organizing an
El Fatah. cell on the West Bank.
