For hiding the Frank family,
Kugler barely escaped with his
life. The Gestapo punished him by
putting him in two Amsterdam
prisons and forcing him to work
in several slave labor camps. Anne
and Margot both died in the noto-
rious German camp at Bergen-
Belsen. their mother died at Ausch-
witz. Their father, Otto Frank,
managed to survive both Ausch-
witz and Odessa and, at 82, is
living in Basle, Switzerland.
"I went to visit him in Switzer-
land two years ago, and I keep
up an active correspondence with
him," says Kugler. "I address him
rather formally as 'Dear Mr.
Frank.' But we both remember
Anne informally as 'a happy,
bright chatterbox of a girl. She was
interested in the stage. I'll never
forget how grateful she was when
I brought her copies of the maga-
zine, Cinema and Theatre. It's sad,
yet fitting, in a way that her mem-
ory will always live onstage be-
cause of those words of hope she
wrote in that red-checkered diary
of hers."

Whenever he sees "The Diary of
Anne Frank" reshown on TV or
revived by a Toronto little thea-
ter group, Victor Kugler is al-
ways a bit startled by the actor
performing the role of "Mr. Kra-
ler." This is the stage name
for the man who, for 25 months
during World War II, hid Anne
Frank, her
parents and sister,
Margot, in an attic at 263 Prinsen-
gracht in Amsterdam — until a
traitor betrayed their secret hide-
out to the Nazis. Kugler is natur-
ally interested in the performance
because he played the role of Mr.
Kraler in real life.
Kugler immigrated to Toronto
16 years ago. Now, at 71, having
recently retired as an insurance
agent, he lives quietly in a bunga-
low in Toronto's suburban Weston.
He gardens, indulges in his hobby
of photography, and occasionally
gives talks to Toronto schools that
are staging a production of the
great drama that affected his life
so profoundly.
