Kol Urges Govt. Aid
for Tourism Boom

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Minister
of Tourism Moshe Kol warned that
Israel might price itself out of the
international tourist market be-
cause the government has failed
so far to implement its decision to
give the tourist industry the same
assistance provided to other ex-
port industries.
Kol said that the failure to grant

For the time being, the minis-
try has discontinued all tourist
promotion and advertising and is
concentrating on improving tour-
ist facilities, Givton said.
He said the income from tour-
ism for the first quarter, not in-
cluding fares, amounted to over
$28,000,000. He said the United
States was still the biggest source
of tourist traffic to Israel, with
France second.

Givton said that about 70,000
prospective tourists from Eu-

be turned away this year for
lack of hotel space. He said that
over 7,000 rooms are under con-
struction but only about 2,000
will be completed by the end

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Friday, July 23, 1971-17

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A sharp
dispute has surfaced between two
groups of West Bank dignitaries,
one of which opposes the "open
bridges" policy that allows free
traffic and trade between the West
Bank and Jordan and opens the
West Bank to visitors from the
rest of the Arab world.
The group is planning to peti-
tion the Arab League Council con-
vening in Cairo shortly to demand
a closing of the bridges. They
claim the open bridges policy is
tantamount to Arab recognition of
Israel and helps the Israeli au-
thorities solve the economic and
social problems of the West Bank.
The other group contends that
the petitioners are advocates of a
separate Palestinian state on the
West Bank. They claim that if the
bridges are closed, young Arabs
would be forced to study in Is-
raeli rather than in Arab univer-
sities and that all West Bank resi-
dents would have to find jobs in
Israel.
It was reported that Syria and
Lebanon will propose in Cairo
thatt he bridges be closed except
on religious holidays.
