Local Med Student
Sees His Draft Plan
for MDs Added to Bill

A unique draft plan for doctors
has been adopted by the U.S. Sen-
ate, four weeks after the idea was
proposed by a Wayne State Uni-
versity medical student, Sol Edel-
stein.
Edelstein suggested that medical
school graduates who agree . to
serve four years in a rural corn-
munity or in a ghetto area should
be exempted from the military
draft.
He contended that such a plan
was not an effort to avoid the
draft but to fill a desperate need
in small towns and ghetto areas.
Edelstein added he is sure only
10 to 20 per cent of graduating
medical students will consider the
program because there is a four-
year commitment. And the result
might be a reversal of the cycle
of doctors leaving rural and ghetto
communities. 'The plan was intro-
duced by Sen. Robert Griffin as
, an amendment to the draft bill.
Before Edelstein's plan can be-
come law, the draft bill itself must
be passed by the Senate. Then it
must go to a Senate-House con-
ference and be signed by the
President.
