4I,

SOLOMON ROSENBAUM, an
attorney and civic leader of Fitch-
burg, Mass., and a former mem-
ber of several Presidential advi-
sory groups, was named by Bnai
Brith to head a special national
committee that will plan for the
Jewish service organization's 1976
bicentennial observance of the
American Revolution.

2 Women's Organizations Applauded
for Their Services to Needy, Children

A total of 50 years' service to
needy and handicaped children was
recognized by the Jewish Center
with the presentation of plaques
recently to Sheruth League and
Northwest Child Rescue Women.
The two organizations were cited
by Center President N. Brewster
Broder at the annual meeting of
the Center. Both groups have
worked closely with the Center to
help meet community needs, he
said.
About Northwest Child Rescue
Women, whose president Mrs. Jack
Nagel, represented the organiza-
tion, Broder said:
"In 1948, in answer to a plea for
emergency aid for child rescue in
Israel, 12 women in the northwest
area of Detroit banded together for
this purpose. These women became
the Northwest Child Rescue Worn-
en with the objective of aiding
needy children.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

"In 1953, the organiaztion under-
took the responsibility of financi-
ally supporting a one-week camp
for mentally retarded children,
open on a nonsectarian basis.
"In 1961, the Northwest Child
Rescue Women, in -cooperation
with the Center, initiated a pro-
gram service for mentally re-
tarded young adults and adults.
The organization has continued
to provide financial assistance
and moral support without ask-
ing for anything in return.
"As a result of their interest and
support, the Center was able to ex-
pand, enrich and enlarge the pro-
gram so that today almost 70
Jewish retarded and slower teens,
young adults and adults attend
weekly social groups, for gym,
crafts and remedial reading class-
es available to them, have par-
ticipated in sex education seminars
and have taken annual trips to
cities like Chicago, New York
and Washington.
"In addition to those currently
served, about 25 others have par-
ticipated at one time and have
since outgrown the program and
are now participating members of
the community . . ."
Broder introduced Mrs. Irving
Adler, president of Sheruth
League, and indicated that the
25 - year - old organization "has
helped indigent Jewish families
send their children to the Center
Day Camp. During the last few
years, since the Center has ex-
panded its summer services, the
Sheruth League has helped older
children attend other summer
programs as well.
"Through the efforts of Sheruth
League, families on extremely low
incomes are able to provide their
children with summer activities as
many other families do . . . When
necessary, Sheruth has helped these
families with camp clothing as
well.
"Many people do not realize that
Jewish needy families still exist.
Sheruth League knows of these
families and uses their financial
resources to make sure that these
children have a pleasant summer's
experience at the Center."
