JEWISH EMOTIONALISM: What makes the Brandeis Camp
Institute tick so well?
The answer is—the unique educational method introduced there
by its founder Dr. Shlorno Bardin, one of the world's best Jewish
educators. Dr. Bardin has been the guiding spirit of the BCI from
the first day of its establishment. He has made the BCI an institution
of living Judaism for Jewish youths who seek the meaning of being
Jewish. He discovered the secret of how to develop and elicit their
Jewish feelings and emotions during the four-week stay in his domain.
In the all-embracing Jewish program of the BCI, the central
emphasis is related not only to learning but also to the extensive use
of the creative arts, thereby involving the campers directly in activity.
Fortunate to have the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis D.
Brandeis as its first active sponsor, the BCI is now being directed by
a board of directors composed of prominent Jewish personalities.
Its president is Dr. Max W. Bray, the well known national Jewish
leader who lives in Los Angeles but is one of the leading figures of
the. Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, the United
Jewish Appeal, the American Jewish Committee and other major
Jewish groups. Steve Broidy is chairman of the BCI Board. Among
its presidents were Dr. Dewey Stone, Abraham Goodman, Herman L.
Weisman and other prominent Jewish men.

THE BRANDEIS ACADEMY: Celebrating the 30th year of its
existence, the Brandeis Camp Institute has started to build on its
2,250 acres, a Brandeis Academy. This will be the first Judaism-based
college preparatory school in the United States. It will be a Jewish
residential high school with students from all over the country.
At the Brandeis Camp Institute one also finds a summer camp for
children of public school age. This is the Camp Alonim which does
not accept more than 200 children. It is similarly an-excellent institu-
tion, as are the weekend sessions for adults and their families which
are held at the BCI.

SPRING PLANNING: With the arrival of spring, Jewish parents
begin to think in terms of selecting proper summer camps for their
children. Most of them seek the kind of a camp where their children
could spend the summer weeks in a Jewish atmosphere.
There are many excellent Jewish camps for children. But almost
all of them are for boys and girls of public-school age. Few are pro-
gramed for youngsters of high school age. And there is almost no
summer camp with a program that would be attractive to youths of
college age.
The Brandeis Camp Institute in California is practically the only
exception.
Located in the vicinity of Los Angeles, the Brandeis Camp Insti-
tute—which has been in existence for 30 years—is attracting more
and more college youngsters from all parts of the country every year.
They come to the BCI for the summer even from distant New York,
Boston and' other cities in the East. The majority of them are com-
pletely alien to Jewish life when they arrive at the BCI. At the camp
they are immersed in four weeks of total Jewish living and return
home with a rich Jewish experience which leaves an impact on most
of them for the rest of their lives.
More than 4,000 student youths—men and women—have spent
at least one summer in this remarkable institution during the 30 years
of its existence. A 14-page questionnaire was mailed to 2,724 of those
whose current addresses are still on the BCI files. Early returns from
the respondents indicate that the experience in the. BCI had a lasting
effect upon them. More than 80 per cent replied that the Brandeis
Camp Institute was a "very worthwhile" experience for them.
Most of the respondents emphasized that they were exposed in
the BCI to a completely Jewish environment for the first time in
their lives. Nine out of 10 declared that the BCI has been . a relevant
experience for their lives in general. About 50 per cent of the alumni
indicated that as a result of their experience in the BCI, they became
more involved in Jewish affairs. Close to 90 per cent of the respondents
have recommended BCI to others. And among the 718 alumni who
now have children, about 650 stated they would want their children
to attend the Brandeis Camp Institute.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

If the father of our country,
George Washington, was Tutank-
hamened tomorrow and, after be-
ing aroused from his tomb, was
told that the American people to-
day spend two billion dollars yearly
on bathing material, he would say,
"What got 'em so dirty?"
