JNF's Better Idea for Mother's Day

The Jewish National Fund has
a gift idea for Mother's Day, May
9. David P. Zack, president, sug-
gests the planting of trees. in Israel
to honor mother or to perpetuate
her memory.
According to Zack, the planting
of a seedling that will eventually
grow into a sturdy, and perhaps

fruit-bearing, tree provides a livin g
link to the land of the Bible.
The lush forests that grow in th e
once-barren desert are a result o f
the purchases of a few trees at a
time by individuals who desired to
mark certain occasions.
Trees planted in Israel can be
ordered from the Jewish National
Fund office, 968-0820. Certificates
are issued to purchasers in the
name of the person being honored.
The JNF office, 22100 Greenfield,
Oak Park, will be open May 9
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

TASTY BAR-B-0 CHICKEN

2 pounds fresh green beans
2 teaspoons sale
3 tbls. butter or parve margarine
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Boil water in a big pot and add the
salt. Clean the green beans and cut off
the ends. Add the beans to the boiling
water and continue cooking till it
comes to a boil the second time. Boil
for 10 minutes. The green beans should
be tender, but still hold some of their
crispiness. Drain all the water from
the pot and then put it back on the
heat for two minutes. This will give
the beans a chance to dry by steaming
off excess moisture.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan.
Add lemon juice and stir. Pour it over
the beans. Serve in a heated plate and
sprinkle the top with the chopped
parsley. If you wish, you may top the
green beans with toasted slivered al-
monds (two tablespoons) instead of
the parsley.

NEW YOK (JTA)—The Ameri-
can Jewish World, in an editorial
discussing the problem of report-
ing by Jewish community news-
papers of mixed marriages, said
its policy was to publish notices
of such weddings if the ceremony
was performed by a rabbi "but
not to accept the story if the cere-
mony has taken place in a
church."
The issue, the Minneapolis-St.
Paul publication declared, was one
"that has increasingly troubled the
editors of Jewish journals and
confused the community."
Some of the publications, the
editorial added, "have, under the
pressure of vocal local opinion,

changed or amended their policies •
All have had to confront the per
plexing problem and sought to
deal with it on various levels of
principle and pragmatism."
Alin k
The Jewish weekly said "we
have been largely influenced by
the willingness of Jewish fam-
ilies to have such notices print-
ed. In other words, if the Jew-
ish family submits the story—
often attended by photos of the
bride—we are—with the excep-
tion noted—inclined to publish
it."
The editorial then cited the find-
ings of a survey on the issue made
by the Jewish News of Newark,
