David Heisler, a retired furrier
who made news in November 1969
when he brought his wartime
Christian rescuer here for a visit,
died Monday at age. 71.
Mr. Heisler, 18669 Faust, was
born in Poland and came to this
country in 1947. He arrived in
Detroit two years later and was a
member of the First Galician So-
ciety, Furrier and Leather Workers
Union and W o r k m e n's Circle
Branch 156.
Survivors are his wife, Antonia
(Toby) ; a son, Steven; two daugh-
ters, Mrs. Irving (Aline) Schuraytz
and Mrs. Albert •(Pauline) Kaner;
and 11 grandchildren.
The Heisler family - parents
and three children-lived in Ber-
lin until they were ordered to get
out of Germany in 1938. They
came to Krakow. Given the choice
of settling on a farm or going
to the ghetto, the Heislers chose
the latter, in Podgrabiye.
When the roundups began, the
Heislers were sheltered by Maria
Kepa and her family with the aid
of a neighbor, Franciszek Siwek.
The Heislers were protected in an
underground shelter under the
Kepa home.
During the entire time, Siwek
had possession of the Heisler's
goods. He sold items when neces-
sary to obtain food for them and
newspapers to inform them of what
was going on in the outside world.
After the Heislers came to this
country, they kept up a correspon-
dence with Siwelc. In. appreciation
for his deeds, the Heislers brought
him here for a vacation in Novem-
ber 1969. Their story was described
in the Jewish News.
