First Federal Savings of Detroit,
Michigan's largest savings and
loan association, will reduce the
rate on regular passbook savings
accounts to 41/2. per cent from 5
per cent on April 1. The new rate
will continue to be paid and com-
pounded quarterly, and deposits
will earn from date of deposit to
date of withdrawal. First Federal
has been paying the 5 per cent
rate since Jan. 1, 1970.
Hans Gehrke, Jr., •chairman of
the board, in announcing this new
rate also disclosed that the associa-
tion will lower its rate on one-year
certificate accounts to 5 per cent
from 51/4 per cent.

ultra-rightwing Breakthrough, was
sentenced Wednesday to two years'
probation, and ordered to undergo
psychiatric examination as a result
of a February conviction of disor-
derly conduct.
The tactics employed by Lobsin-
ger, who was fined $75 plus $350 in
court costs, were attacked by
Judge John Wise, saying they "re-

1st Jewish Chief Justice
Appointed in Manitoba

WINNIPEG (JTA)—Justice Sam-
uel Freedman has been appointed
chief justice of Manitoba and will
be the first Jewish provincial
chief justice in Canada's history.
He will succeed C. Rhodes
Smith, who is retiring at age 75.
Justice Freedman, born in Zhi-
tomir, Russia, 62 years ago, came
to Canada with his parents at
age 3. He was named to the Mani-
toba Court of Queen's Bench in
1952, to the Manitoba Court of
Appeals in 1960 and served as the
chancellor of the University of
Manitoba.
He has long been active in the
fields of Jewish education, and in
Jewish and pro-Israel activities.
He is a member of the board of
governors of Hebrew University
in Jerusalem.
