JOE SACCO'S
Jewish Cultural Fund Sees 10 Pre-Doctoral Fellows in Colege Jobs
NEW YORK — Dr. Robert Rock-
away, formerly of the University
of Michigan, is among 10 former
pre-doctoral fellows of the Nation-
al Foundation for Jewish Culture
who have accepted faculty appoint-
ments during the past year in
major universities throughout the
world, six in the United States,
mainly in the fields of Jewish
studies."
Dr. Rockaway, assistant profes-
sor of American history at the-
University of Texas in Austin, re-
ceived a grant to complete his
doctoral dissertation on the history
of the Detroit Jewish community
while at U. of M.
There were unconfirmed re-
ports that the three Jewish min-
isters of Schreyer's New Demo-
cratic Party (moderate Socialist)
Cabinet had opposed such sup-
port, though one of them, Saul
Cherniack, is himself a graduate
and a _former president of the
I. L. Peretz Day School and an-
other, Said Miller, sends his
children to a Jewish day school.
Miller, the minister of education,
earlier had stated that the govern-
ment did not plan legislation on
this issue in the current year—a
statement now contradicted by the
premier's announcement.
The premier's statement may
increase the pressure for aid to
private and parochial schools in
the province of Ontario, which
will go to the polls in provincial
elections within the year.
