El Al: Matchmaker
of the Jet Age

"Holiday for Singles in Israel,"
a new two-week tour, combines all
the major sightseeing spots with
special emphasis on socializing
with Israeli contemporaries.
Shiluv, the Israel and World
Jewish Friendship Society, plans a
host of gatherings from a welcome
cocktail reception and home par-
ties to individual dates. And there's
plenty of free time to pursue
preferences beyond the superficial
level.
The itinerary covers Tel Aviv,
Jerusalem, Jericho (the oldest city
in the world), lower Galilee, up-
per Galilee and the Golan Heights,
the Negev and Haifa. It includes
an evening and overnight stay at
a kibutz, the famous wine cellars
at Rishon Letzion, the Masada
fortress, Marc •Chagall's stained
glass windows, the artists' colony
at Safed. In addition, the tour of-
fers optional visits to the Tel Aviv
Country Club and a air tour to
Eilat.
The package price takes in
raundtrip airfare, hotels, full
brunch-style Israeli breakfasts,
sightseeing and an evening musi-
cal performance. A colorful
brochure is available from El AL
For those who prefer traveling
on their own, Israel is one of the
best—and friendliest countries in
which to do so. Shiluv will intro-
duce Israelis who share special
interests.

Negro-Jewish Relations
Bibliography Published

The American Jewish Commit-
tee has published a 20-page anno-
tated bibliography on Negro-Jewish
relations, representing varying
viewpoints on the changing rela-
tionship between the two groups.
In an introductory note, Harry
Fleischman, race relations coordi-
nator for the Committee, points out
that Negroes and Jews have
worked together for the civil rights
cause for decades.
But tensions have since arisen
between Blacks and Jews, result-
ing, Fleischman observes, in occa-
sional "overt racism on the part of
some Jews and overt anti-Semitism
on the part of some Negroes,"
which threaten "to rupture the
traditional alliance between the
two groups."
The bibliography, which was pre-
pared to encourage a focusing "on
ways of resolving differences,"
lists some 95 provocative books,
pamphlets, magazine articles and
special reports.

'SCHECHTER & HIRSCH'S'

Unsuspecting Sinners

BY MOSHE H. ZIRIN
Normally, there would be
nothing unexpected, in fact it may
even sound dull, if a distinguished
rabbi would come out these days
against nakedness. But that cer-
tainly has not been the case when
Chef Sephardic Rabbi of Tel Aviv,
Yoseph Avadia, has done it. There
has been plenty of the unexpected
and nothing dull in the nature of
nakedness and the people accused
of its promotion and manifestation
have been taken to task in the
rabbi's pamphlet "Tora MeZion"
(Law from Zion).
It is not the nakedness of night-
club shows or the X-rated movies;
nor the wearers of minis and bi-
kinis or any other, conventional,
unholy exhibitionist that the rabbi
deals with in his pamphlet. The
rabbi's attack is directed against
the . . . rebetzins' (apparent)
nakedness and those who allow
and even condone it—most revered
rabbis and rebbes.
Can you imagine the rebetzin,
coming to shul, seemingly partly
naked? It can be quite. einbaras-
sing if it happens. If? It does! So,
at least, claims the rabbi, who is
facing this agonizing situation
regularly (so are we, but we just
happen to be too insensitive or too
ignorant).
Again, let us get the f acts
straight: When talking about
rebetzins, the rabbi is not refer-
ring to the "progressive" ones or
even to the Orthodox with differ-
ent shades of gray; what he means
is the old-fashioned, no-nonsense,
ultra-orthodox rebetzins as we pic-
ture them: Dark clothes, long
sleeves, maxi-dresses and sheitels
(wigs) — much before those have
become the fashion.
Talking about the "trade-marks"
of these rebetzins, here we actually
put the finger on the issue that
disturbs the rabbi so much: the
sheitel.
The ultra-Orthodox women, to
comply with the Talmud's ruling
"married woman's hair is naked-
ness," have resorted, with the
blessing of the rabbis, to the shei-
tels to cover their so-called naked-
ness; this way they have complied
with the decree, yet maintained

their feminine looks. Nowadays,
claims the rabbi, wigs are pre-
pared so expertly as to leave the
viewer with the dilemma: Does she
or doesn't she? The rabbi levels
his attack against the most revered
rabbis who condone this practice
and even allow their wives to re-
sort to it, and he strongly urges
the religiously-oriented newspapers
to refrain from accepting ads pro-
moting the sale of wigs.
Rabbi Yoseph certainly has a
point. Besides, if a married
woman's hair is "nakedness," the
wearing of the nakedness of an-
other woman over ones own - sug-•
gests some form of obscenity.
Furthermore, even if the wig was
not made of married woman's hair,
which in principle makes it
Kosher, then might not this prac-
tice still have the ingredients of
pornography?
