Louis E. Levitan, director of the
Detroit Israel Bond office since
1958, was honored at a 60th birth-
day surprise party given for him
Sunday by the
Radomer Mutual
Society of De-
troit at the Young
Israel Center of
Greenfield.
The evening
was prepared and
conducted by Ra-
domer past presi-
dents Oscar Gold-
berg and Eleanor
Manela.
Levitan
Following a pattern of "This Is
Your Life," Rabbi and Mrs. Her-
bert Eskin told of their long as-
sociation with Levitan and of his
job as division chief of the Inter-
national Refugee Organization
(IRO). In this capacity, he was
responsible for rescuing hundreds
of Jewish children lost during the
war, as well as aiding thousands
of displaced persons.
Levitan was presented with a
painting by the organization of
which he has been honorary vice
president for 10 years.
Max Sosin, president of Cong.
Bnai David, and Eric Rosenow
provided entertainment.
Levitan, who was born in the
Ukraine, was 11 when his par-
ents brought him to the United
States. They settled in Chicago,
then in San Francisco. He was
graduated from the University
of Illinois and enlisted in the
armed services during World
War IL
After the war, he served as chief
of the bureau of documents and
tracing for the United Nations Re-

lief and Works Agency and later
as a division chief of the Inter-
national Refugee Organization
(IRO) in Stuttgart. With the latter,
he headed all Jewish DP camps
in the central section of the U. S.
zone of Germany. Many Radomer
members, refugees, recalled Levi-
tan from Germany.
It was in Stuttgart that Levitan
met his future wife Marie in
April 1947. They were married in
October 1947 in Paris.
Levitan later served as IRO
director of welfare for Italy and
as regional director for the Ameri-
can Joint-Distribution Committee
in Milan.
In December 1948, he left for
the United States and arrived in
New York where he stayed for
only a few weeks before depart-
ing for the West Cbast (the Cali-
fornia area). When Henry Monitor,
the man responsible for starting
the sale of Israel bonds, approach-
