in 1938. He was 'followed •
year later by Mike (Michael) and
his brother, and by the mother in
1941. Mike's father- died -in New
York when the boy was 12 and
the family was near starvation
throughout World War II. After a
while, as a post office truck driv-
er, Mike became assistant to a
costume jeweler. While studying
acting with Lee Strasberg, he
made his money as disc jockey,
soap opera performer on radio
and equestrian coach for rich
ladies. Switching to pre-med study
at the University of Chicago, he
met through friends his nightclub
-partner of the future, Elaine May,
who had made herself a name as
actress and author of sketches.
Together they founded, with
other aspiring thespians, the Play-
wrights Theater Club, which evolv-
ed into the Compass Players, an
improvisational theater that in
turn became the famed "Second
City" revue. The first program
contained such names as Alan
Arkin, Shelley Berman, Barbara
Harris and Zohra Lampert, in addi-
tion to Nichols & May. The couple
surfaced as a comedy team when
a well-intentioned sponsor tried to
move the Compass Players to New
York. The deal collapsed. The
"Second City" show was joined by
Paul Mazursky and Larry Tucker
(later to become well-known as
the director-producer-writer team
of "Bob and Carol and Ted and
Alice".)
