IN FRONT OF THE Miami
Beach hotel where he and wife
Ruth are staying, George Haar was
using a magnifying glass to read
the fine print of a newspaper when
the smell of smoke infiltrated his
nostrils . . . The sun had been hit-
ting George's heavy lens reading
helper . and burnt a hole in his
pants!

AT THE RECENT board of di-
rectors meeting of Detroit Business-
men's Group, City of Hope, in oil-
man Eugene Epstein's office, Jack
Beckwith, tasting the coffee given
to him, remarked, "Now I know
what Gene does with the oil that
comes back!"

such an honoring affair expected
to be on hand . . . Max Sosin

CALLING JIMMY LAKER . . .
It was back in 1945 that you had
the photography bug, and were
"shooting" a group of women .. .
had them all set in the viewfinder
when one sneezed . . . All was set
... then she sneezed again ... By
this time, you were disgusted . .
The room was warm and the gals '
about to call it quits . . . The
lady of many "ah-choos," feeling
ashamed, promised to keep it in
. . . So you tried again . . . The
gals perspired no end as you lined
up for the shot . Finally, it was
all set . . The woman kept_ her
promise . . . and then . . . you
sneezed!
IRVING LITKE likes to go duck
hunting . . . and while waiting
around for the hunting season to
open, he practices duck calls . . .
Iry has a duck caller with which
he has proverbially broken at least
three leases . . . During his recent
two-week vacation, Iry sat around
the house in Southfield and did
nothing from morning until night
but call ducks . . . And late one
night his call was answered! . . .
A green teal duck came - sailing
through the window and landed at
his feet . . A note was attached
to the duck's neck, "Here's your
mate. Now go and lay an egg!"

The sexes are the first, or are
among the first, great experiments
in the social subdivision of labor.

—Samuel Butler.
