Allon Urges Preference
for Former Soldiers
. Seeking College. Entry
_
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Deputy
Premier -Yigal Anon suggested in
the Knesset. Tuesday that former
soldiers be given precedence when
applying for admission to Israel's
- Overcrowded universities.
Allon, speaking in his capacity
as minister of education, said the
preferential treatment should be
given to veterans if they have the
same qualifications as other appli-
cants who, for various reasons, did
not serve in the armed forces.
Among the soldiers, preiedence
should be given those who earned '
the combat badge, AllonTsaid. The -
Knesset began a debate Tuesday on
higher education. Israeli authori-
ties have been criticized for turn-
ing away thousands of qualified
students each year because they
lack the facilities to admit them.

DIETARY QUERY
- In an interview in "Cinema
Special" • on ITV last week, Sir
Laurence Olivier told a story about
the late Marilyn Monroe.
Soon after she becorae engaged
to Arthur Miller, Marilyn was in-
vited by her Orthodox Jewish fu-
ture in-laws to a traditional meal,
which included chicken soup with
matzo balls. During two subsequent
visits she was regaled with the
same delicacy. AIIRLid for the third
time whether she had enjoyed the
matzo balls, Marilyn plaintively
replied, "They're fine_ .. but isn't
there any other part of the matzo
that you can eat?"

RICK WIT
Both as a speaker and as a Labor
Cabinet Minister, Harold Lever
has the unique experience of being
as much praised for his wit and
ability by the Conservatives as by
Labor members. Now it is being
persistently reported _ that Mr.
Heath will appoint him as the next
governor of the Bank of Kngjand.
I hope, therefore, that his wit and
humor will not prove an obstacle
to attaining' this awesome position.
When he was asked once if he
would have married hii beautiful
wife, Diane—and, believe me, 'she
is beautiful, unlike some of the
entrants in the Miss World contest
—had she not brought with her a
dowry of 2,000,000 pounds, Lever
replied: "Oh yes, I would have
Married her if she had had only
one million."

106 Arabia,' 16• Jews in 1970
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Gen. Men-
ahem Aviram, commanding officer
in the Gaza Strip, described Pales-
tinian terrorists as callous men
who have no regard for even the
lives of their fellow Arabs. In
1970, he said, terrorists in the
Strip killed 106 Arabs in addition
to 16 Jews, and wounded 642
Arabs in addition to 109 Jews.
Gen. Aviram announced those
figures shortly after an explosion
in the Postal Bank office in Gaza
Monday morning killed three
Arabs and injured 61 others and
severely damaged the structure as
well. He charged that the bombing
was meant to intimidate the
12,000 Strip residents who com-
mute daily to Israel proper for
work. He said the bomb had ap-
parently been carefully Planned
for the early 'morning hours on
the first day of a new month, when
the number of workers in the
building is at a maximum because
of pay day.
Gen. Aviram said the terrorist
who had rolled a dynamite-filled
tire into the bank had apparently
posed as a worker waiting for his
check. In the three weeks since
the Israeli border force stepped
up its crackdown on terrorists,
Gen. Aviramsaid, widespread
searches have rooted out only a
few dozen terrorists and a limited
supply of weapons—less than are
believed in the area. The Gaza
prison, - he noted, is filled to cap-
acity with 700 guerillas, most of
them already Convicted of terrin-
Israel Bans- Commercial-
Ads' on TV - Temporarily
JERUSALEM (JTA) The go+,
ernment decided Sunday to with-
hold approval -for- commercial
advertising on television for the
time being. It'acted in accordance
with a recommendation by the
plenary council of the Israel Broad-
casting Authority.
The authority has the power to
authorize TV commercials but de-
cided not to exercise it in view
of the far-reaching affects such a
move was likely to have on the
national economy.
The principal objection to com-
mercial TV _ stems from the fear
that it would stimulate private
consumption 'at a time when the
government is battling inflation.
The Israel Newspaper Publishers
Association has voiced opposition
because TV advertising w ould
divert revenues from newspapers.
