Editor, The Jewish News:
I read with sympathy last week's
letter by Mrs. Barbara Adler.
There certainly is no reason why
the Jewish community and all of
its various agencies should not give
its unmitigated support to the new
strictly kosher restaurant that re-
cently opened its doors at Ever-
green and Twelve Mile in South-
field. What is even more astound-
ing is that some individuals and
at least one organization that I
know of which is supposedly ded-
icated to the furtherance of Jewish
observance should oppose such an
establishment.
Everybody knows bow much of a
sacrifice it is for a man to keep
a restaurant closed on the Sabbath,
and to keep it strictly kosher at
that! I agree with Mrs. Adler that
a Jewish community of this size
certainly ought to have its own
kosher restaurant, but how can it
in the face of petty quibbling and
internal dissention?
Your editorial comment doesn't
shed much light on the situation.
You say "Except for New York,
New Jersey and Florida there are
no known states operating strictly
kosher restaurants." . . . As far
back as 10 years ago there were
strictly kosher restaurants in com-
munities much smaller than ours
in Memphis, Tenn., Los Angeles,
Calif.. New Haven, Conn., Atlanta,
Ga., Baltimore, Md., Boston, Mass.,
Philadelphia, Pa., and many
others.
We finally have something wor-
thy of our pride. Let's give it every-
thing we have to make it a success.
Sincerely yours,
Rabbi JACK GOLDMAN

THE MANAGER SAYS THOSE PRICES

STEAL MY SON, THE LAWYER, SAYS,

Silent No Longer

BY MERIAM MARGOLLS

"Silent Jews of Russia " are silent
no longer!
Their voices onrushing surge
ever stronger
Batter against their imprisonment wall!
So bold, so relentless, so brave
.
Is their spirit
Through curtain of iron the world
_
can hear it
And all who love freedom must
answer their call!

As a river cut off from its
source cannot live,
As a tree from roots severed its
fruit cannot give
And as both, thus deprived, are
destined to die—
So the Russian Jews, toc, in
their roots and their source
Fer survival, as Jews, see- their
only recourse
And pressures to rob them of
these they defy!

Like brave eagles. held captive,
they strain for She flight
From encasing confinement by
Soviet brute might
To unbridled fulfillment in Israel!
But their cage doors are locked
and the bars are too high
For their wings, cramped and
shackled, above them to fly
And each effort they make their
captors repel!!

Yet. their hearts filled with
courage reject all despair
And their voices of protest like
thunder cleave air,
Overflowing beyond imprisonment
wall!
In' the outside world is heard
their 'passionate plea
To help shatter their chains
that nrevent them to nee-
And all who love freedom must
answer their call!

Michigan's rivers and streams
would reach one and a half time
