Multiple Salutes Highlight Bonds
Event Extending Honors to Mrs. Adler

Impressive ceremonies marking
the Hanuka festival, the lighting
of the special 12-branched Israel
Menora and emphasis on Israel's
needs that call for vast invest.
ments to assist in the country's de-
velopment, marked the Israel Bond
dinner at Cong. Shaarey Zedek
Sunday evening.
The occasion served to honor
Mrs. Morris (Goldie) Adler who
was presented with the Eleanor
Roosevelt Humanities Award in
recognition of her many contribu-
tions to Jewish causes.
With Israel Ambassador to the
United States Itzhak Rubin and
Mrs. Rabin as notable guests,
the dinner, attended by more than
550 who subscribed to more than
$1,000,000 in bond purchases, was
among the impressive of the year's
Israel functions.

Ambassador Rabin presented
Mrs. Adler with the medal that
marks the Eleanor Roosevelt
awards. In addition, Mrs. Morris
Schaver gave Mrs. Adler a com-
memorative volume containing
photos and newspaper records
of the honors accorded the hon-
oree. Rabbi Irwin Groner, Louis
Berry, dinner chairman; Dr.
Samuel Krohn, Shaarey Zedek
president, and Robert Brody,
chairman of the Detroit Israel
Bond committee, joined in ex-
pressing appreciation for Mrs.
Adler's services.

Turning to the Menora, he
gave a five-fold definition for
Hanuka: 1. Light means free-
dom, progress, belief. 2. It sym-
bolizes our struggle for freedom
and against bigotry. 3. It sym-
bolizes liberation, in our day
making Jerusalem again the
Jewish capitaL 4. It represents
a share of perspective for a peo-
ple who fought for so long, re-
minding them: "What is a cen-
tury more or less in our life?
Nothing Is easy in the struggle
and if it takes 20 or SO more

years, it is the perspective in re-
lation to history. 5. It represents

the Miracles, the realization that
we have to fight for the freedom.
"You can't achieve it without the
willingness to join the fight . . .
You have to believe in miracles
but they do not occur unless they
are supported by something
practical."

ing to make note of the achieve-
ments of a distinguished member
of the group and in her response
Mrs. Adler, addressing herself to
"dear mishpaha," made reference
to her late husband, and to the
bol of light represented by the
many encomia of the evening.
"The rabbi has been here all Twelve Tribes, was lit by a num-
day," she said. "whispering in my ber who were selected for the
ear, -'Goldie, please don't inhale.'
I am the symbol of many women
who have done as much as I did.
Tonight we rededicate ourselves
to work together and to stretch
out our hands to our brethren in
Israel, to contribute to this cause
our zeal and our help."

The evening's ceremonies start-
ed uniquely, with Mrs. Louis
Berry offering a toast to Presi-
dent Zalman Shazar of Israel,
the audience then joining In the
singing of Hatikva, and Brig.
Gen. S. L. A.' Marshall toasting
President Richard Nixon, the
audience then singing the Star
Spangled Banner.

Cantor Jacob Barkin, who led
in the singing of the national an-
them, also gave the musical pro-
gram, with David Syme at the
piano. Morris Karbal recited the
Hamotzi and Cantor J. H. Sonen-
klar led in the Benshen.
Berry, as chairman of the eve-
ning, placed emphasis on the vital
need to strengthen Israel through
Israel Bond purchases.
The address of Ambassador
Rabin was an inspirational evalua-
tion of the Hanuka festival. Rabin
pointed out that Israel's army does
not offer decorations. It only em-
phasizes participation in military
services regardless of rank, he
stated, with every citizen doing
his bit to contribute to the coun-
try's defense.
