describes life in the Old World
and in this country.
"In Search of Happiness" is the
story of immigrants who in the
process of becoming new Ameri-
cans, learned to overcome the ob-
stacles that confront those who
change citizenships. They become
loyal members of a new society
while retaining devotion to their
faith and to the aspirations of their
kinsmen.
Zorah and Esther are the two
chief characters in this story.
Both are of differing back-
grounds. They meet on the boat
that brings them to America and
they fall in love. There is an
interim period during which
they lose track of one another,
but when Esther locates her
lover in a hospital where she is
doing volunteer work their re-
lationship is renewed. They
marry, raise a family, later set-
tle in Israel.
In his interpretive approach to
the problem of a couple that as-
nick has occasion to show the
European influences and the prim-
ary considerations that are the
American ways of life. Zorah goes
through the paths of seeing a con-
tinuation of Jewish devotions min-
gled with the areligious ways of
those who abandon kashrut, who
are nonobservant but who never-
theless have Zionist leanings.
He is influenced to become a
teacher, after turning down a re-
quest to study for the rabbinate.
He trains for watch repairine, but
the urge to teach induces him to
render service in the field of peda-
gogy.
At the same time, Esther, too,
goes through some testing per-
iods. Their life is a happy one,
and it is when they settle in Is-
rael that they become imbued
with the kibutz way of life.
All of it is marked by a lone
process of challenging events out of
which grows a devotion, a loyalty
to family and the People and Land
of Israel.
There is a moving conclusion.
Esther dies and is buried in the
cemetery of the community whence
she came. It is told in the epilogue:
"Esther was buried on the ceme-
terey that belonged to the towns-
people of Kozan. When the cantor
finished the prayer with the quo-
tation from the Bible: 'Thou eom-
est from dust and unto dust thou
shalt return,' Zorah paraphrased
the passage in a hardly audible
voice, 'Thou comest from Kozan
and unto Kozan thou shalt return."
The love story, the influences of
a Jewish heritage, the author's
deep-rooted personal devotions and
his knowledge of Jewish events as
they affected Jews throughout the
world—all lead up to an interesting
plot.

Woes on Auto Race
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Orthodox po-
litical leaders ran into trouble in
their attempt to raise $60,000, to
compensate the promoters of an
international automobile race in
Ashkelon for rescheduling the con-
test from Saturday to Sunday.
The money is supposed to cover
losses incurred by holding the race
on an ordinary work day instead
of Sabbath.
Only 10,000 of the expected 50,-
000 spectators 9howed up. The
rest had their money refunded.
The Mizrachi Bank agreed to
nay the promoters by Jan. 10,7 1971
but there were doubts whether the
guarantee for the loan would be
forthcoming. The guarantee was
supplied by the Eretz Israel Fund.

tional expenses.
Jewish Agency Treasurer Aryeh
Dolzin said that he would discon-
tinue the NRP's allocations if
funds earmarked for other pur-
poses were used to pay off the race
promoters. .
Meanwhile, the NRP leader-
ship came under strong criticism
from the party's younger ele-
ments for "buying out" the Sab-
bath. They objected to a spe-
cial campaign for funds to pay
the Mizrachi Bank loan.
A member of the Ashkelon City
Council obtained an injunction
from the high court prohibiting the
town's religious council from using
municipal funds to pay bills incur-
red by preparations for a mass
demonstration against the race.
The religious elements were
planning to bring thousands of ye-
shiva students and other zealots
to Ashkelon when it appeared that
the race would be held on the Sab-
bath.
They ran up a substantial debt
for sleeping accommodations, food
and drinks for the would be dem-
onstrators. The City Council peti-
tioner claimed that the religious
council's money is intended solely
to provide Orthodox residents of
Ashkelbn with' religious services. •
