Bombs Bit 2 Rochester Synagogues

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (JTA)—Two
synagogues here were ravaged by
bombs early Tuesday morning, in-
juring two persons slightly and
causing extensive damage to both
buildings.
The blasts, which were spaced
10 minutes apart, occurred shortly
after midnight at Temple Beth
Sholom and the Light of Israel
Sephardic Center. This is the sec-
ond time in two weeks that Ro-
chester has been the target of
what police termed "maniacal
bombers."
The first wave of bombings oc-
curred Oct 12 when dynamite
bombs were touched off in the
Federal Building. Monroe County
building, two black churches and-
the home of a union official.
Police Commissioner John Mas-
trella stated that the bombings ap-
peared to be a "coordinated at-
tack," and District Attorney B.
Lazarus said that "circumstances
would indicate that there is a
definite link between the two
waves of bombings."
No motives' or suspects for any
of the bombings has been found.
Rabbi fisionson Cohen, spirit-
ual leader of the Sephardic Cen-
ter, estimated the damage in-
flicted upon his synagogue as
SOS- to SWAN. No immediate es-
timate of the damage to the
Temple Beth Sholom Center was
available.
Although chemical tests to de-
termine what kind of explosives
were used had not yet been made
at the time of this writing, prelim-
inary observations indicated that
it was dynamite.
Twenty minutes before the blast
went off at Temple Beth Sholom,

Israel Has Right
to Exist—Ghandi

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Premier
Indira Gandhi of India said here
Sunday that her country was not
anti-Israel and that Israel had a
right to exist. She said that she
saw no reason why the Jarring
peace talks cannot be resumed, de-
spite peripheral issues.
Mrs. Gandhi was interviewed on
NBC-TV program "Meet the
Press" by Lawrence E. Spivak,
producer of the program, and Paul-
ine Frederick of the NBC news
staff.
Spivak questioned India's atti-
tude toward Israel "because of
India's all-out support for the Arab
position in the Six-Day War."
Mrs. Gandhi said, "India is not
anti-Israel. Since the state has
come into being, we believe it has
a rigid to exist but we also believe
It can' exist in peace if it has good
neighborly relations and under-
standing with its neighbors." Asked
if she placed "full responsibility on
Israel for getting good relations,"
Mrs. Gandhi replied, "No, the
responsibility is, naturally, all
around. It is also on the United
States to some extent"
Asked by Miss Frederick if she
had any recommendations to get
the Jarring talks started, the In-
dian premier said, "I find it diffi-
cult to understand why the talks
can't go ahead. In other places
and other situations, in spite of
cold war and fighting, negotiations
have begun and have been pos-
sible."
Miss Frederick asked If India
had conveyed these views to the
two parties. Mrs. Gandhi replied,
"I don't think directly, I think
some of us have said so. That's
all."
