REHOVOT—A new method for
using magnetic fields to increase
or reduce the intensity of light
emitted by crystals, which may
enable the development of new
types of solid-state devices, such
as transistors, was one of the sub-
jects discussed at the Second In-
ternational Symposium on Organic
Solid-State Chemistry at the Weiz-
mann Institute of Science.
Participating in the symposium,
which was sponsored by the Inter-
national Union of Crystallography
and the International Union of
Pure and Applied Chemistry, were
70 scientists from Australia, Eng-
land, France, Greece, Holland, Is-
rael, Italy, South Africa, Switzer-
land, the. United States and West
Germany. Israel was chosen as the
site for the symposium because
of the pioneering role of Weiz-
mann Institute scientists in this
of research.

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — A
Jewish merchants group in a
racially mixed high-crime area of
South Philadephia is seeking to
combat lawlessness with commu-
nity projects in cooperation with a
like-minded group of black resi-
dents in the area, and on its own.
The efforts by the South Seventh
Street Businessmen's Association
include reviving a moribund neigh-
borhood recreation center and in-
troducing innovations such as mod-
eling courses for girls, sewing
courses, hockey and baseball
teams and tours by youth groups
of museums and other sites in
the city.
According to Iry Zelnick, a Sev-
enth Street poultry and seafood
dealer for the past 20 years, the
idea is to get youths "off the street.
and get them involved in construc-
tive projects."
Not all of the Jewish merchants
agree with that approach. At a
meeting of the association the
main emphasis was on "law and
order."
