DANGER SIGNALS: Revival of anti-Semitism in the United States
is now becoming more and more noticeable. It is not the kind of anti-
Semitism of a generation ago, when Jews had almost no access to
government careers or met with restrictions in admission to medic;-1
colleges, or were conspicuously not wanted in certain clubs and hotels,
or were ignored in certain industries when it came to advanced posi-
tions. The new form of anti-Semitism which is beginning to find its
expression today is not social or economic. It is mainly political
and this makes it even more dangerous.
Anti-Semitic groups which were on the rise since the end of World
War II are now beginning to come to life again as "right wing" groups.
Added to them, are the anti-Semitic tendencies in the New Left. Added
to the above, is the wild anti-Semitism of the Black Panthers and other
Negro groups, not to speak of the anti-Israel feelings that are now
developing in the American church bringing with them anti-Jewish
moods in general.
In "decent" American circles, where one was only a few years ago
careful not to say anything offensive to Jews—where anti-Semitism
was considered an indication of "bad manners"—one can hear today
guarded remarks on Jews which border on anti-Jewish prejudice. Cer-
tainly indifference to anti-Semitism is now noticeable among sections
of the American population which only a few years ago equated anti-
Semitism with Fascism and Hitlerism. Jealousy of Jewish achievements
is provoking anti-Jewish sentiments among certain elements of white
Christians, while determination to replace Jews in municipal and othei
positions is clearly expressed even by moderate blacks.
All this creates an open field for the demagogic anti-Semite and
enables the professional anti-Semitic elements to raise their ugly heads.
Anti-Jewish propaganda—whether against Israel or against American
Jewry—has during the last two years gained in momentum. Especially
since the Arab-Israel Six-Day War. And the churches play no small
role in it, notwithstanding the efforts to strengthen Judeo-Christian
amity.

STIMULATING ANTI-SEMITISM: In the light of the growing
infiltration of anti-Semitic moods even among Americans who usually
consider themselves indifferent to anti-Semitism, the poisonous asser-
tion by Col. Charles Lindbergh that Jews and the British have pushed
the United States into World War II against Hitler is of special
significance.
If any strength was needed by American anti-Semites in their
propaganda against American Jewry, Lindbergh has now provided
such strength. His anti-Jewish allegation, touching upon the sensitive
nerve of war guilt, has provided ammunition for all kinds of anti-
Semites. -His libel against the Jews constitutes not only fresh blood
injection to professional anti-Semites but also a stimulus to American
innocents to begin thinking about Jews in his terms.
Because of his record as the flyer who made the first non-stop
flight over the Atlantic to Paris, there exists the potential danger
that his charge against American Jewry will be blown up by . Jewish
enemies in this country to become a second "Protocols of the Elders
of Zion." Anti-Semitic elements among reactionary Americans may now
seek to rally around him in their poisonous propaganda against Jews
which had little or no effect for more than two decades. He may
suddenly find himself the central figure of American anti-Semites, as
was Henry Ford I about two generations ago until he realized his
grave mistake and publicly apologized to the Jews.
Lindbergh's unfriendly views on- Jews were known since the years
when he visited Nazi Germany—before the ontbreak of World War H-
and fell under the spell of Goering and other top Nazi leaders. How-
ever, it was not anticipated that he would ever come out with wild
accusations against American Jewry as he did now in his book. The
fact that he emerged with them now—after restraining himself for
more than 25 years from doing so—indicates that he believes that he
could do now what he could not do years before and that he considers
the climate in this country more receptive for. anti-Semitic propaganda.

RECEPTIVITY TO BIAS: The pulse of America's receptivity to
anti-Semitism was taken recently on behalf of the Anti-Defamation
League of Brie Brith by two scientists in a study they conducted on
the tenacity of prejudice. The results of the study presented a picture
which gave Jewish organizations much food for quiet thinking. They
showed the existence of a great potential for anti-Jewish sentiments,
if anti-Semitic allegations—such as Lindbergh's now—are not strongly
counter-acted.
The study has established that only one-third of all Americans are
virtually free of anti-Semitic prejudice; another third maintains a nega-
tive image of Jews; the remainder—also a third of the population—
is indifferent to political as well as to social anti-Semitism.
This is a very discouraging picture, and can become worse in years
of restlessness, frustration, riots, unemployment, inflation and other
ills, when disillusioned people usually fall prey to the influence of
demagogues and bigots. The study also brought out the fact that while
only 5 per cent of those polled said that they would vote for anti-
Semitic candidates, more than 33 per cent- said that the anti-Semitic
beliefs of the candidates would make no difference to them.
Here again is where Jewish reaction to anti-Semitic figures like
Lindbergh must be intensified now. Should Lindbergh and others like
him, choose to run for important public offices, there will be plenty of
reactionary elements who will vote for them regardless of the present
indifference to anti-Semitism which many of them profess.
