'Jewish Mystique' Too Mystifying

In "The Jewish Mystique," pub-
blished by Stein and Day, Prof.
van den Haag touches upon many
questions that have assumed a
popul a r interest. Since Jews
always are news, books on subjects
related to Jews have attracted a
wide reading public. But all too
often there are no questions asked
about such texts, and the van den
Haag book is no exception. It has
become easy to impose such works
upon the market.
In reality, the new mystique book
is no more mysterious than any
other work that capitalizes on the
sensational: this one is no excep-
tion whether it deals with the van-
ishing Jew (sic!) or with Jewish
sexuality.
It is when van den Haag begins
to speculate on sex that he
proves that he needed some bet-
ter advice than he had gotten
for this book. For instance, on
the question of circumcision he
states: "To this day, even when
they think themselves entirely
'liberated' from all religious
ideas or feelings, Jews will still
have their sons circumcised on
the eighth day after birth." He
proceeds to explain: "The sign-
ificance of the eighth day is that
it is the first day after the ritual
number of seven."

With such profundity we hardly
need rules and regulations or de-
finitive works on Judaism. The
author admits that people of all
faiths now circumcise their boys,
yet he writes: "The fact that lov-
ing parents would deliberately put
a child through what is, after all,
a form of mutilation seems baff-
ling."
And this is the approach of a

writer who speculates about the
vanishing Jews!
But he admits the indestructibil-
ity of Jews through the ages, the
power of survival, and concludes,
after listing the role of Jewish con-
tinuity:
"Who, therefore, would be
presumptuous enough to predict
the fate of the Jews from now

Only one who is positive can be
the prophet of survival and re-
demption; otherwise he is the
prophet of doom. And prophets of
doubt—if van den Haag is not a
prophet of doom he certainly is a
prophet of doubt—are not authori-
ties. Therefore, "The Jewish Mys-
tique" is not sufficiently authorita-
tive. —P.S.
