Sammy Davis Jr. to Perform at Masonic Auditorium on Sept. 24

The unknown kid from Harlem author, comedian and movie pro-
who achieved the top rung of ducer. He is in demand as a guest
entertainment success — Sammy on television and radio "talk"
Davis Jr. — will appear at the shows.

MUCH THANKS while I was
away . . to guest columnists Hy
Lewis and Dr. Jack Jackman in
Detroit . . . two ever dependable
stalwarts whose guest columnizing
deserves the worthiest of hearty
appreciations.
EDITH AND MAX LEVINE
were invited to a shower this sum-
mer for an Egyptian girl brought
here to Detroit by HIAS (in Egypt,
showers are attended by both men
and women) . . . and learning she
had no parents, they offered to
make the wedding outdoors at their
home in Southfield . . . Hilda
Kodsy and Solomon Castro are
both from Alexandria, Egypt, but
met here in Detroit about a year
ago . . . He is- an electronics engi-
neer and was exiled to Italy, went
to France and came to Detroit via
HIAS . . . The wedding was held
last Saturday night . . . with al-
most 90 people in attendance as
Edith and Max "gave the bride
away" under
a four-man-held
hupa outdoors.
ONE BIG CAKE CELEBRAT-
ING five birthdays ... no candles,
but everyone's name on it . . .
helped fete the gala shindig at one
time given by Shirley Barris in
Huntington Woods recently . . .
The five were Jack Bigelman, her
dad (Aug 18); Laurie Bigelman,
her mother (Aug. 23); Joe Joseph-
son, her uncle (Aug. 16); Seldon
Barris, her father-in-law (Aug. 21),
and Stacey Barris, her daughter
(Aug. 26) . . Good thing there
weren't any candles . . . no one
would know who missed, and if I
know Jack, he'd take credit for
blowing them all out himself!
ELI SPRINGER, secretary-treas-
urer of Metropolitan Cab Co., driv-
es a bullet-proof cab and told friend
Jimmy Laker about it Someone
threw a brick through the rear
window and Jimmy had question-
ing eyebrows about Eli's proof-
positive cabbie . "If it had been
a bullet," said Eli, "nothing would
have happened!" . . . (The driver
is completely enclosed in bullet-
proof protection, including the
glass partition between himself
and passenger.)
KIM JAN GURWIN, 4-year-
old daughter of Lenore and Jerry
Gurwin, has a seven-month-old
three-pound Yorkie puppy named
Charly who underwent a most un-
usual bit of "major surgery" that
had the phones at Gurwin's Auto-
body Klinic owned by dad, tied up
in constant anxiety as to his condi-
tion . . . Seems that Charly, not
content with being just an ordinary
dog, decided to grow two sets of
teeth at the same time! . . . Last
info has it that five were pulled
and Charly is feeling dog-gone good
again.
LOTS OF FOLKS ask where
they can get tickets to the dinner-
dance being tossed for me Oct. 13,
at the Raleigh House . . . I know
brother Mary has some at 535-6760
. also Sammy Woolf, Michael
Goodman, Sol Lewis, Angel at
Angel's Hour Glass, Hy Lewis, Al
Rosenberg, Max Sosin, Jimmy
Rachleff, Dr. Jack Jackman, Percy
Swartz, Hal Gordon, Mitchell New-
man, Mannie Mackie, Sam
Schwartz, Jimmy Laker, Jimmy
Sapperstein, Sam Gellen, Michael
Aller, Drs. Harry and Lou Woll
and probably a bunch of others on
the committee. If not, the fellows
know where ducats can be gotten.
AN AMERICAN TOURIST friend
of Sammy Lieberman was gazing
down into the crater of a famous
Greek volcano ... Finally he com-
mented, "It looks like Hell!" . .
"Oh, you Americans," said his
guide, "you've been everywhere!"

After two decades of success,
Davis strives harder than he did
when he was an unknown out .f
Harlem working with his father
and uncle, in thousands of dives
and dumps for a few dollars a
night.

Davis has starred in 11 feature
motion pictures, has released over
30 LP albums as well as more

than 15,000,000 singles. Six of his
singles are in the "standard'
category.
Davis has appeared as enter-
tainer on almost every major
television variety show and at
every important night club on the
globe.
As a straight actor, Davis, along
with his friend Sidney Poitier,
were instrumental in breaking
down traditional taboos against
black performers in major roles
in the movies and on TV.
