B'NAI B'RITH IS CONCERNED!
Support of Israel
Fifty-five national Jewish organizations, with B'nai B'rith included, pledged moral
support in achievement of peace, and material support for Israel's economic pro-
grams.
In conjunction with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Or-
ganizations, B'nai B'rith urged immediate release by Algeria of hijacked airlines
and 12 Israeli nationals, and called the incident a "barbaric threat to the political
and economic security of Israel and its national civilian airline."
B'nai B'rith's President Dr. William A. Wexler joined this Conference's direct
appeal to the President to supply Israel with Phantom Jets as a deterrent "to Arab
war-like acts."
The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations met with
Secretary of State William P. Rogers to express apprehension at a "substantial
change in American policy in the Middle East." Dr. Wex le r, the President of
B'nai B'rith—who was elected as chairman of the Presidents' Conference for 1970
—played a prominent role at this meeting.
Soviet Union
B'nai B'rith in conjunction with the American Jewish Conference on Soviet
Jewry, adopted 32-page white paper documenting USSR oppression of Jewish
citizens and set up massive program for national and local action in behalf of
Soviet Jewry.
Jewish Youth
B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations reported some 350,000 Jewish students, about 80
per cent of Jewish college-age population, are attending colleges. Jewish attend-
ance had risen 23 per cent at small schools.
B'nai B'rith Youth Organization conference discussed such aspects of anti-social
behavior of youth as drug addiction and acts of vandalism and irresponsibility.
B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations directors considered attracting Jewish students by
experimental forms of worship.
