In a statement here, Dr_ Gold-
mann said, "The world watches
with profound anxiety the aggra-
vation of the situation in the
Middle East brought about by the
active military participation on
the part of the Soviet Union.
"This military escalation has
created a situation which threat-

quences for the entire world."
"The WJC, representing more

Editor, The Jewish News:
For those concerned with the
Middle East crisis, the escalation
of the "war after the war" has
been a time of great frustration. I
have been greatly upset by the
malicious name-calling that oc-
curs and the reluctance to com-
promise that has been reported.
Does this rhetoric solve anything?
All it does is provoke bitterness,
driving the hope for peace farther
and farther away from reality_
As I view it, everyone concerned
has so much pride they are fear-
ful to admit they are wrong. The
Four Great Powers have caused
this problematic situation.
It is a tragedy to see such
events occur since Arabs and
Jews find their roots with a
common father, Abraham. Their
cultures are much the same. Of
course Jews have been influ-
enced by their hosts. It is a
culture which can be of great
value to the shaping of oar world,
but now it is horribly shadowed
by bloodshed and mourning.
To my knowledge, the general
relations between Arabs and Jews
has been one of an unusually good
nature. Of course, there have
been exceptions. From my discus-
sions with Arab students, I have
found a maintained friendship be-
tween their families and their ex-
Jewish neighbors.
It is our objective, all those con-
cerned, to change hatred and con-
flict to peace. We cannot change
the past but we can hope for a
joyful future.
I beg your awareness to help
create this situation. To love is
hard, but it has surprising results.
Let us hope that next year at this
time we will be able to celebrate
the reality of "Nation shall not lift
up sword against nation; nor shall
they learn more of war." (Isaiah)
