Revolutionary Cure for Racism Projected
in Dr. Locke's Challenge to White Liberals

A distinguished leader in the
black community has diagnosed
the problems of the liberals and
has set forth a
series of guides
to assist in find-
ing solutions to
the mounting
problems in the
current revolu-
tionary conflicts.
The Rev. Hu- .
Dr. Locke
bert G. Locke of
the office of religious affairs of
Wayne State University, in an 88-
page paperback entitled "The
Care and Feeding of White Lib-
erals," published by Newman
Press, goes deeply into the entire
problem. He deals with it sub-
titularly as "The American Trag-
edy and the Liberal Dilemma."
In an introduction to Dr.
Locke's hook, Senator Edmund
Muskie points to the "crisis in con- ;
fidence" now being experienced
in America and declares: "A dem-
ocratic society may be a pluralis-
tic society, but it can not be a
fragmented society. If it is to sur-
vive as a community in which
each citizen has an opportunity
to achieve his or her potential, it
must have joint action toward
common goals without regard to
differences in color or ethnic or-
gin."

Locke's important review of an
existing situation deals with case
histories, with basic facts to il-
lustrate how "white liberals turn
out to be conservative at heart."
His view is: "They are conserva•
Lives because they hold to an
antiquated view of American life
which never was and which, in
II likelihood, never will be."

There is a severe accusation in
his declaration: "The white liberal
would never admit it . . . but his
treatment of black attitudes and
opinions . . . has all the paterna-
listic, condescending earmarks of
the racism he so richly and right-
eously denounced." He attaches
guilt to liberal clerics and asserts:
"They have caught a vision,
committed themselves to causes
and led crusades to which their
flocks are either indifferent or
hostile. And instead of becoming
the skilled therapist who tries to
assess the roots of patient's illness
and then lead that patient toward
an effective cure and eventual
wholeness, liberal clerics are more
likely to develop what in biblical
terms might be called an Elijah
complex; they flee into the safety
of their studies and complain
loudly that the world in general
