The number of participants in
the summer programs has in-
creased more than 25 per cent
over last year. The first contingent
will leave for Israel from New
York June 21, and there will be
daily departures of groups until
July 8.

Foundation programs in Israel

further growth of the
While
programs is expected during the
next years, many requests for
this summer cannot be filled.
There has been great demand for
participation in the new Adventure
In Kibutz by 16-18 year old high
school students.

From all over the country, ap-
plications were received for the
new archeology seminar but only
a limited number could participate
in it this summer.

The number of locally organ-
ized groups, through Jewish cen-
ters and synagogues, was larger
than expected. High school and
college students applied in in-
creased numbers for participation
in the second folk dance institute.
The University of California at
Santa Cruz which, together with
the Youth Foundation, initiated
a special program of having stu-
dents live and work in Israeli
kibutzim as part of accredited
course work last year, is sending
another group at the end of June.

In addition to the 2,800 partici-
r pants in the AZYF summer pro-
grams, more than 200 college stu-
dents and recent graduates will
participate in the year programs
of Sherut La'am. Another 300
are taking part in the workshops
of the Zionist youth movements-
Bnei Akiva, Habonim, Hashomer
Hatzai• and Young Judaea.

Community Relations
Plenary in Cleveland

CLEVELAND—The effect of the
growing polarization in American
society on Jewish community life
will be the focus of major discus-
sion at the annual four-day plen-
ary of the National Jewish Com-
munity Relations Advisory Coun-
cil, which opens here Thursday.

Delegates representing NJCRAC's
nine national and 85 local consti-
tuent groups, many of whom are ,
troubled by a threatened erosion
of individual rights and freedoms
growing out of the erupting
clashes between right-wing and
left-wing extremisms, will seek to
establish guidelines for Jewish
community programs that support
the orderly processes of demo
cracy.

Poll Shows Opposition
to Nixon Vietnam Policy
and Support For Israel

NEW YORK (JTA) — Congress-
Richard L. Ottinger released
the results of a poll of his West-
chester-Putnam County district in-
dicating strong opposition to the
Vietnam
administration's
Nixon
policies and strong support for Is-
rael.
Ottinger, a candidate for the
Democratic nomination for the
U.S. Senate. sent a questionnaire
on eight major issues to the 150,-
000 households in his district in
March. On the Middle East, 52 per
cent believed the Nixon adminis-
tration has weakened its support
for Israel, 34 per cent disagreed
and 14 per cent had no opinion.
Fifty-one per cent favored imme-
diate sale of U.S. warplanes to
Israel, with 38 per cent opposed
and 11 per cent undecided. Ninety-
one per cent expressed the belief
that direct Israeli-Arab negotia-
tions were necessary to achieve
peace.
On the Vietnam War, 52 per cent
of those responding found the pres-
ent rate of U.S. troop withdrawals
unsatisfactory, while 35 per cent
approved and 13 per cent had no
opinion.

Thant Urges Big Four
to Aid Mid East Peace

UNITED NATIONS (JTA) —
Secretary General U Thant, con-
tending that the Middle East war
has reached a stalemate that "ser-
iously threatens the peace of the
world," has called for greater Two
Power and Four Power peace ef-
forts followed by "an international
consensus on the vital issues."
Thant, addressing the annual
luncheon of the UN Correspond-
ents Association, said that since
"there has been no evidence that
the issues of the Middle East con-
flict can be settled by the parties
through their own efforts," inter-
national aid "should he increased
and intensified."
