Robinson, whose 75th birthday
was celebrated by 20,000 at the
Israel Bond Hanuka Festival for
Israel at Madison Square Gar-
den in 1968, was born in Romania
and was brought to this country
at age 10. He served in the navy
in World War I and with the Of-
fice of War Information in World
War II. He began his acting
career on the stage after grad-
uating from the American Aca-
demy of Dramatic Arts more
than half a century ago. He has
acted in scores of theatrical pro•
ductions and since 1929 has star-
red in more than 100 films.
Robinson has been awarded the
American Humane Association's
gold medal, the Louis D. Brandeis
gold medal for service to human-
ity; the Eleanor Roosevelt Human-
ities Award; the New York City
College's James P. Hackett Medal
for outstanding achievement in
oratory and drama; and the Screen
Actors Guild Award for distinguish-
ed achievement in his profession.
His interest in the cause of Is-
rael dates back many years and be

Reception for Ackerman

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Dembs will
host a leadership reception in
honor of Cantor Shabtai Ackerman
of Cong. Beth Abraham 8:30 p.m.
Monday in the West Penthouse of
North Park Towers, Southfield.
Guest speaker will be Ira Fein-
berg, first American volunteer to
join the Palmach, the commando
unit of the Hogana, in the Israel
War of Liberation.
Feinberg saw combat in the
Galilee against the invading forces
of Syria, and then
w a s transferred
to the besieged
city of Jeru-
salem, which he
helped liber a t e.
Prior to Israel's
establis hmen t,
Feinberg arrived
in then Palestine
with a group of
illegal immi-
grants from dis-
placed per sons
camps. He had
served with the
U.S. Army Intel-
ligence as an Feinberg
Arabic translator. He speaks many
Arabic dialects and several foreign
languages, including Hebrew, Span-
ish, Italian, French and some Rus-
sian.
The leadership reception is in
advance of the Beth Abraham tes-
timonial dinner June 22, which will
honor Cantor Ackerman as "man
of the year" for his 15 years'
service to the congregation, the
community and the state of Israel.
