Samuel Lipsitt, 85
Lipsitt, founder and
former owner of the Roseville De-
partment Store, died Wednesday
at age 85,
Mr. Lipsitt, 8905 Kingswood,
was a native of Toronto and re-
tired in 1949. He was a member
of the Harvey Levenberg Lodge
of Bnai Brith in Mount ,Clemens
and the Zionist Organization of
America.
Surviving are his wife, Alice;
two sons, Dr. Seymour and Har-
vey; two brothers, Arthur and
Murray; and six grandchildren.

man, for many years editor of the
American Examiner, a New York
Jewish weekly, and a former edi-
tor of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency daily news bulletin, died
here last week at age 73.
Born in Russia, he came to the
United States while in his teens
and later became Moscow corres-
pondent of the JTA in the years
immediately after the Russian Rev-

Bluma C. Levin, former Detroit
attorney and Chicago social work-
er, died Monday at age 84. She
was the aunt of Federal Judge
Theodore Levin and great aunt of
State Sen. Sander Levin, Common
Pleas Court Judge Charles Levin
and Detroit Common Councilman
Carl Levin, among many other
nieces and nephews.
From 1924 to 1929, Miss Levin
practiced law here, and from 1929
to 1950, she was a social worker
for Cook County, Ill. She lived in
Detroit since then, currently at the
Jewish Home for Aged. Born in
Toronto, Miss Levin was a mem-
ber of Hadassah and active in Jew-
ish activities.

Joseph Alterman, Writer
on War for Independence
TEL AVIV (JTA) - Nathan
Alterman, 60, poet, writer and
chronicler of the Israeli indepen-
dence struggle, died here last Sat-
urday. Mr. -Alterman, the spear-
head' of avant-garde H eb r e w
poetry, wrote of the development
of Israel during the British Man-
date and spoke out against all
forms of corruption in the Jewish
state.
Born in Warsaw but an early
emigrant- to what is now Israel,
Mr. Alterman wrote a weekly
column for Davar, and earlier for
Haaretz, and was the author and
translator of many plays. He was
active in politics as polemicist and
as an advised to leftist youth.
