much of Israel's problems today
is the fact that oil interests domi-

time.
If only Europe wasn't so depend-

was another source of oil for Eur-

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

In •e future, European oil
may come largely from the great
new oil fields of the "North
Slope" of Alaska. After all, the
great icebreaker-tanker Manhat- •
tan did go through the North-
west Passage over to top of Can-
ada last fall. This was in all of
the papers, and the March 1970
issue of NATIONAL GEO-
GRAPHIC tells all about this
great event, which I consider the
most important development of
1969, far more important to the
world, especially to the USA and
Israel, than the moon landing.

There are great problems, tech-
nical and political, before large

tankers can carry oil from Point
Barrow. Alaska, to Europe. But •
this well be solved. Once a ship has
made the Northwest Passage, and
is just below Greenland, it is just '
about as close to Europe as to the
U.S. And Europe needs the oil,
not the U.S.
My confidence stems from the
great investments, in the hun-
dreds of millions of dollars, that
are being put in the Alaska oil
field development. The experi-
mental icebreaker-tanker Manhat-
tan cost Humble Oil about $40,-
000,000 alone. The big oil interests
will certainly try to extend their
market to Europe. A hint of im-
proved conditions in the future.
