The practice of having study
circles in the synagogue on Sab-
bath afternoons, is traced by the
rabbis back to Moses. The rabbis
claim that Moses was asked to
summon large assemblies every
Sabbath and order the people to
have Sabbath assemblies (Yalkut
Shimoni, Va—Yakel).
An interesting tradition relates
that the Torah originally com-
plained that the people of Israel
would not study because they
would be engaged in their re-
spective trades and professions.
The Almighty answered that on
the Sabbath, the people of Israel
would refrain from the usual week
day activities and would engage
in Torah study (Pesikta Rabbati)
177:B).
The Torah is read twice on
the Sabbath day—once in the
morning and once in the after-
noon.
The morning reading, of course,
is the major Torah reading of the
week. The afternoon reading was
added for the sake of those who
might be unable to attend the
synagogue on Monday and Thurs-
day because of their pre-occupa-
tions with making a livelihood.
They thus were given the chance
of hearing the Torah reading on
Saturday afternoon at the Minha
service.

It is a Jewish tradition to
study Jewish culture on the Sab-
bath.
The rabbis felt that studying
the Torah affords a sense of rela-
tion. The Sabbath being a me-
mortal to the creation of the world.
was commemorative of the action
of the Creator, who paused from
His work on the seventh day and
reflected on the works of His crea-
tion. Man, the miniature creator,
is expected to emulate the model
set forth for Him by the Almighty
Himself. Therefore, he should like-
wise refrain from his creative
enterprises and reflect on the
world as a whole as well as on
his Creator and his Torah.
The final lecture March 26 will
be presented by Dr. Fred Rosner,
assistant director of hemotology at
Maimonides Hospital, Brooklyn,
whose topic will be "Recent Medi-
cal Advancements and Challenges
