MILLIKEN'S EDUCATION PROGRAM ENDORSES
VALUE OF THE HEBREW DAY SCHOOL OPTION

CHALLENGE OF FUTURE HELD
IN CHOICE OF DAY SCHOOL OPTION
TO BUILD INFORMED JEWISH LAITY

By David S. Tanzman, President

Childhood education is prologue to adult conduct.

It is utterly essential that the children of the
chosen people be given an educational choice
in this community which not only meets the
entrance requirements of more demanding in-
Stitutions of learning both religious and non
religious but also strengthens the Jewish stu-
dent with necessary intellectual insight and
mental maturity to cope with the forces bent on
confusing and confounding him and leading him
away from Judaism.
With this target of purpose the AKIVA
HEBREW DAY SCHOOL came into existence
and set its curriculum accordingly. We envision
the AKIVA graduate as one wholly prepared
for the involvement in local, national and
worldly events and at the same time a positive
personality dedicated to living in accordance
with the rules of the Jewish faith as stated in
the Torah and projected for day to day living
by great prophets and rabbinical sages.
What are the OPTIONS that AKIVA OF-
FERS THE JEWISH BOY AND GIRL IN THE
METROPOLITAN DETROIT COMMUNITY?
Instead of going to public school which by
its very nature does not teach religious precepts
or practices, AKIVA offers a Hebrew school in
which required general studies are obtained
along with necessary religious education. Both

Love of Israel and commitment to its purpose in
the future of Judaism, as it has been in the past is
taught with unreserved dedication by fife AKIVA staff.

In addition there is the future expectation
of AKIVA insofar as a senior High School in
Detroit is concerned.
At present this is not available in Detroit.
This AKIVA feels is a MUST in its program
of preparation for the higher institutions of
learning and the real world thereafter. Another
option of special interest by AKIVA is the cal-
endar. The public school schedule throughout

"And thou shalt love the Lord Your G-D

With all thy heart, with all thy soul
And with all thy might"

We are living through difficult times. Conflict seems to be
the order of the day, both on the domestic and international scene.
Abroad, we are witnessing conflict in the form of a war in Viet-
nam, tension in the Middle East—with tiny Israel struggling vali-
antly for its very existence—starvation in Biafra and a multitude
of other potential hot beds throughout the globe. At home, we
are surrounded by conflict as expressed by racial unrest, violence
on the campus, the generation gap, the use of drugs and disregard
of moral and ethical norms. Mankind has turned its back to the

ideals and values which have given it direction and guidance in the past. Are there
new ideas and values evolving to take the place of the old? Or have we out-lived the
era where ideals and values are needed to give purpose to life?
Judaism offers us a frame of reference and presents us with a perspective, so di-
rectly lacking at this cross road in history. By their very nature, the teachings of
Judaism are both timeless and timely. Its truths are eternal but, at the same time, ap-
plicable to each new era and meaningful to each
new generation.
How can present day youth meet the chal-
lenge and apply the teachings of Judaism to its
contemporary environment? The Hebrew Day
School seeks to provide the answer. It is the pur-
pose and function of the Hebrew Day School not
only to expose the Jewish child to the teachings
of our religious and cultural heritage, but also to
show him its meaningfulness and relevency in our
modern society so that he will be inspired to shape
his life in accordance with its lofty ideals and

the year is geared to accommodate the Gre-
gorian calendar—whereas the AKIVA schedule
of curriculum and activities takes the Jewish
calendar into positive account as well. In this
manner the religious holidays of the Jewish
faith and the national holidays are fully enjoyed.
Finally, the entire structure of religious
education at AKIVA is intended to further a
Torah-oriented Judaism as developed through
the ages by the prophets and sages. This can
only be presented with total integrity and
wholesome meaningfulness when taught by
teachers who are both highly qualified and who
actually live the very instruction in their daily
lives.
In this manner AKIVA feels that the edu-
cated Jewish laity necessary to support the offi-
cialdom of religious and professional lay leaders
of our communities will come forth.
Leadership without intelligent following has
no opportunity to succeed.
It is this combination of options, facilities
and attitudes that make AKIVA unique in the
metropolitan Detroit community. This option is
essential to the Jewish boy and girl whose par-
ents mean to address themselves to this ques-
tion:
THROUGH WHAT INSTRUCTION DO I
WANT MY CHILD TO COME AND HOPE-
FULLY COME AWAY WITH A POSITIVE
OUTLOOK IN LIFE—BOTH SECULAR AND
RELIGIOUS?
AKIVA feels the answer is in the day school
— singularly the AKIVA HEBREW DAY
SCHOOL.

of these study programs take place in the same
hours that every American boy and girl as-
sumes as must study hours.
The public school system automatically im-
poses upon Jewish boys and girls and their par-
ents the necessity of continuing educational
hours into the late afternoon and evening to ob-
tain a minimum Jewish education whereas the
AKIVA curriculum of combining general and
religious studies during normal school hours
releases the Jewish boy and girl for the second
set of options—to do as they wish—at sports,
social activity, art, library or any direction
which commands their attention and permits
their time.
This is a set of options available only to the
youngsters who have completed their general
and religious studies for the day.
The option of the public school and the
afternoon Hebrew school—and this is accepted
reluctantly if chosen, too often results in the
compromise of the Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah
and is the point of conclusion rather than the
point of intensification.
