Cong. Shaarey Zedek will hold
its second monthly Friday late
evening service 8:30 p.m. Dec. 12
with a guest sermon delivered by
Dr. Gerson Cohen,
professor of his-
tory and director
of the Center of
Israel and Jew-
ish Studies at
Columbia Uni-
versity. Ile will
speak on "Why
the Jews Survived
—the Will of God
or historical
Forces?"

The brief Friday evening serv-
ices are followed by an oneg Sha-
bat in the social hall.
Dr. Cohen's appearance is part
of the congregation's first "Great
Weekend" even sponsored by the
cultural commission. Ile will cover
a variety of subjects as guest
lecturer during the three days of
activities. Ilis theme for the entire
weekend is "Myths and Realities
of Jewish History."
At the regular Saturday morn-
ing service Dec. 13, Dr. Cohen
will discuss: "Assimilation:
Curse or Blessing?" That after-
noon, he will speak to the Junior
Congregation on issues and ques-
tions of their own choosing.
Dr. Cohen will close the "Great
Weekend" before the Men's Club
Sunday morning by discussing the
question "Is Anti-Semitism a Real
Threat?" That lecture will follow

logical Seminary of America and
Columbia University, Dr. Cohen
has served as librarian and assist-
ant professor of Jewish Literature
and Institutions at the Jewish
Theological Seminary and the Gus-
tav Gottheil Lecturer in Semitic
Languages at Columbia.
Shaarey Zedek's Friday evening
services will be held the second
Friday of each month through

Reform Day School
Be. ins Enrollment

Distribution of enrollment ap-
plications for the first all-day
school under Reform auspices has
been started by its sponsor,
Rodeph Sholom Temple of New
York, one of the nation's largest
Reform congregations.
A brochure issued with the ap-
plication forms said the day
school would be open to "all pupils
who qualify for its academic re-
quirements, regardless of faith or
origin."
The brochure said that the co-
educational school would begin
next September with a pilot pro-
ject of two classes, kindergarten
and first grade. Each year there-
after, one more grade will be
added, with "the guarantee of a
complete educational unit of seven
years of schooling — kindergarten
through sixth grade—provided for
the initial pilot classes."

Instruction will be designed
"to transmit the best of the Jew-
ish heritage from a liberal point
of view," according to the
brochure. "There will be no
doctrinaire approach to either
Jewish religious belief or prac-
tice."

The day school board is cur-
rently negotiating with architects
and contractors for construction
of a new school building.
The brochure said the language
of instruction would be English
and that conversational Hebrew,
as a modern language, "within the
scope of daily activities, will he

Council of Synagogues
to Convene in Israel

The World Council of Synagogues
will hold its next biennial conven-
tion in Israel, June 22-25, it was
announced by Morris Speizman of
Charlotte, N.C., president of the
global body.
